Built in 1929, this hotel has the feel of old world hospitality. The staff are all wonderful, from the valet parking your car to the maid turning down your bed. Rooms are nicely furnished (if rather ponderous) with heavy wooden furniture and dark colors. The beds are opulent but very soft, which hurt my back. The windows open which is nice, but nonetheless it was stuffy and hot at night. There is no air conditioning. The bathroom with its heated floor and huge jacuzzi was a treat. The 'signature breakfast' was fairly basic, consisting of two eggs as you wished them to be cooked along with toast and juice. The coffee was good! Overall an enjoyable stay.

On the positive side, the hotel itself is charming, with a cute little courtyard. Great breakfast was included in our room. The service was fabulous, everyone was nice and went out of their way to be friendly and helpful.
On the negative side, our attic room (not cheap, although I realize the entire Carmel area is expensive) was very shabby and not enjoyable to spend an extra minute in. The carpet was filthy, a big tear in the draperies, poor lighting and lack of electrical outlets. The bathroom was updated and nice, although small.
The extra $30 per night was for what????

Not only shabby, as in filthy carpet, plastic shower floor, no counter space in bathroom, barely functioning door locks, insects buzzing around, no hot water first night, but worst of all, shabby treatment and tacky additional fees. Thirty dollars each on check in for “service” but tips still added in at meals. Breakfast included means eggs & toast, anything else, means additional charges. Asked for a bottle of water, “we don’t have any” Asked to be informed when car service arrived, no notification. Pompous attitude at front desk. Steer clear, outrageously overpriced, even for pricey Carmel!

Just got back from a visit to L’Auberge Carmel. We had a really relaxing time and loved the beautiful courtyard and kindness of the team at this hotel. The rooms were comfortable and cozy along with a nice soaking tub in the bathroom. It was 90˚ in October with no option for air conditioning or even a fan offered to move the air—which was disappointing as it did not match up with service. So we sweltered. When shown to our room (at the top of a narrow staircase) we asked if we could be moved and told there was not a possibility despite my needing a cane to walk. This too, did not match up with the care and service that we saw when checking in. Breakfast was delicious—and a treat with fresh squeezed orange juice and eggs. Little touches like a turn down service and cookies in the room were thoughtful. Location is great within the village.

This hotel has a great location. Staff was very professional. Breakfast was good. But for $454 a night you do not expect a tiny room at the top of a very steep narrow staircase. Not enough counter space in bathroom. Shower was fine. Had to move furniture to plug in. Room decor dated.
