Comfortable hotel perfectly located on the GR5

This hotel is located at Pied du Melezet almost 2km from Ceillac but very close to the GR5. We chose had a twin room upstairs (double and single) with a perfect view of Cascade de la Pisse opposite. The room, bathroom and separate WC were adequate and comfortable for one night's stay, but the room was somewhat cramped for a longer stay. It was extremely hot, still 32C at 10pm, so one can only dream of air conditioning which is standard nearly everywhere in the world these days except Europe. Our a-la-carte dinner was very good along with the ambience of the dining room. We had our own muesli breakfast given that French petite-dejeuners are pretty woeful. Overall well worth the extra walk out of Ceillac.

I've stayed twice in hotel cascade and both times we were disappointed about the room. First time we had room nr 6 with a double bed downstairs and 2 beds upstairs. The beds are outworn and uncomfortable, the bath room crappy and not very clean, and the toilet -located under the stairs- unusable for people above 1,5m. Second time we had room nr 2 with a renewed toilet and bathroom but located above the kitchen. It's very noisy so don't expect to sleeps until the kitchen is finished. The great thing about the hotel is the outside terrace with a great view on the waterfall. The restaurant is OK but not very special.

Amazing location, mediocre hotel

Situated two kilometres from Ceillac village, this little hotel is surrounded by mountains and faces the (mini) ski slope and, of course, La Cascade itself. We were lucky enough to have a room with a view of the waterfall and it was a real treat to be able to sit on the balcony after a long day of walking in the mountains. Unfortunately, the room itself was decidedly shabby. The narrow corridors (with carpeted walls and stains on the floor), low ceiling, poor ventilation, toilet stuffed into a broom cupboard, slightly mouldy bathroom and mattresses that probably dated from the 1960s all combined to give the place an oppressive air that detracted from the beauty of the surroundings. We were extremely lucky with the weather during our stay and so we were never obliged to spend any significant amount of time (conscious) in the room, but on the last day it rained (a lot) and then we really felt the sadness of the place take hold.
In addition to the obvious thriftiness of the management in terms of decor and heating (there was none), the woman who appeared to be in charge of the establishment was unfriendly and unhelpful towards the guests and downright rude to the staff. On the plus side, however, the rest of the staff were very pleasant and managed to take the edge of the chill, which was otherwise pervasive in this little hotel.
Another very pleasant aspect of our stay was the restaurant - good, hearty mountain fare served up by friendly, efficient staff who went out of their way to replace the meat with more vegetarian-friendly options (a gesture I rarely encounter in France - most times I'm lucky not to be put outside to eat with the livestock :)
Overall, we had a really fantastic time on this holiday, but if we go back one day (and I hope we will) we'll be renting a self-catering apartment in the village and coming up to La Cascade in the evening for dinner!
