What People are saying

elegant and charming!

Like this hotel very much. The setting is delightful. Rooms comfortable, although hardly any toiletries, so bring your own! Take time to walk round the grounds, especially the vegetable and fruit garden. However, breakfast was disappointing. Expensive and definitely not worth it in my opinion! Fruit had seen better days and eventually, after requesting more than once, scrambled egg was served, which was not particularly nice! We did eat in the Vasco restaurant which I think is the bistro. It was excellent and the food some of the best I have had! Setting and staff very good. Apart from breakfast, this was a very pleasant experience, and is beneficial, because it is so near to the channel tunnel when returning home., with a touch of luxury as a bonus!

Good Stopover to or from UK

Decent hotels are hard to come by in the Pas de Calais so this destination should be considered. Its prime function is a Conference Centre, but nevertheless it manages to be classy and cosy at the same time. Not inexpensive, and breakfast is extra, but worthy of your consideration. Just a few miles off the A26. Extensive gardens in which to wander. And a choice of 3 restaurants offering a range of food from pub grub to fine dining. Incredibly comfortable beds, well appointed bathrooms, robes and slippers. Safe and mini-bar, but not tea-making facilities. Excellent wifi.

Surely not my last visit!

La Chartreuse du Val Saint Esprit is in anyway a positive experience!
From the check in to the check out it was a delight. I mentioned the reservation was for our 31st wedding anniversary, I was just excited to spend a weekend in Gosnay, and I was happy being married for such a long time, but the hotel kept it in mind. They had a nice surprise for us during the dessert buffet. Thank you!
The rooms are beautiful decorated, wallpaper with flowers, Chinese vases, beautiful, old furniture, etc... a nice size bathroom. Our bedroom was overlooking the fields, we slept with the windows open, and had the nicest wake up call ever by the birds.

The cuisine is very refined, fresh ingredients, all coming from the garden. Do take a walk in it! Fruits, vegetables, roses, other flowers,... all in nice boxwood patterns, such a delight to see!
The wine list is impressive and good.
The staff is very professional. If your French is not so good, they do the best they can to help you in English, which is not obvious for French native speakers. They are invisible, but always there when needed.
Do I return? Yes. We stayed in a very similar hotel in Italy, where I felt like a princess, La Chartreuse du Val Saint Esprit does the same. I had tea time in the garden of my “ own castle”. Loved it.
The only thing is, Gosnay is far much closer to Belgium than Italy.
Keep on doing the good work! A nice place I can only recommend to everyone!

Conference Centre not hotel

We booked this Hotel through SLH website 5 months prior to arriving... traveling from Australia through Normandy and Northern France

We've had membership for many years and whilst most hotels are of good standard in the group we were a bit surprised with this one to say the least. The whole place smells like a stale cigar.

Firstly... its not so much a hotel as a conference Centre and Restaurants, with a hotel attached as an afterthought. If you're here as a 'guest' then 'bon chance'. If you're here with a conference then you're likely to be OK. On a positive note the room was well sized and comfortable.

There is no bottled water provided or Tea/Coffee facilities - these appear to be charged for in the rooms. Free with any other hotel at this level.

Breakfast was of average quality with the only hot component an Omelette.

Ive posted separate entries on each of the two restaurants we visited here - Le Vasco de Gamut and Distillerie - please read in conjunction with this post.

You also need a car. Its not close enough to anything to walk to and whilst Bethune is nice enough you can do the town in about an hour - if that. In my opinion there are better paces to stay if you want to look at locations on the Western front with better locations, pricing and service.

Very dissapointing

We stayed for 3 nights over Easter to visit a WW1 grave of a relative and do some general sightseeing of the battlegrounds.
We had room 21 on the ground floor which was dreadful. The bathroom is old, outdated and mouldy, the carpet in the room filthy and there was a thick layer of dust on everything. And as for the bed, we both came home with bad backs. Appallingly worn out and uncomfortable. We normally stay at Le Chateau de Beaulieu which is close by, cheaper and far superior in every way. The whole place needs a complte refurb. We will not be staying again.
