A restaurant with aspirations attached to a minimalist hotel

Another place we are revisiting: the balance now seems definitely to be more on the restaurant than the hotel accommodation. The rooms are still very basic, with hot water taking some time to arrive, but they and the bathrooms are clean, some rooms having nice balconies and are certainly still very peaceful. The best deal is the all in rate, which includes the lower-price dinner menu, with wine and breakfast.
Even going for that option we had a succession of appetisers to keep us going before the main courses arrived.We had meat, our companion fish, and the accompanying wines mirrored that choice. Portions are small but aiming high in terms of gastronomy.

Peace and calm away from the A7

This small and unpretentious hotel has simple but comfortable rooms and excellent food, in a small village a short distance from the A7 autoroute.

I didnt want to leave my room because of the view of the room. I had an amazing time there and would come back again

Just to make it clear, Le Giffon is a restaurant –with excellent food- that also provides some bedrooms. The rooms are very small and need urgent refurbishment; however our first floor room was clean. And in fairness, what else do you expect for < Euro 50. And on top of that you get high quality food with menu’s not over-expensive. We recommend this place for its good restaurant but you should consider staying in another hotel if you expect a good comfortable room.

Friendly hotel with excellent restaurant

The hotel and restaurant are situated in a sleepy village near to the town of Crest in the Drome, which has France's tallest fortified tower. The hotel was a little disappointing as the bedroom was in need of a refurbishment. However it was clean and we were advised by the proprietor, David Soulier, that refurbishment of all the bedrooms would be taking place soon. He had only recently bought the place and it was a little tired. The restaurant was really special. We had probably one of the best meals ever in France. As I said the room was rather small but there was a balcony overlooking the restaurant terrace. The proprietor has worked in the UK and Ireland and I think he said he worked with Gordon Ramsey at one time.

The restaurant really was something else. It was full but the service was excellent. There was an excellent choice of dishes and wines with recommendations from David Soulier and his sommelier. We began the meal with a glass of Clairette de Die which is a heady fragrant (cream soda) fizz from perfumed muscat grapes which comes from Die which is about 1/2 hours drive away.You must try it.

I am sure this restaurant will be a 'must' visit for the French gourmet dining crowd very soon. I think it is worthy of a Michelin star.

I have given the overall experience as 4 because I had to take into account the bedroom.
