What People are saying

Tricky to locate!

carol son 28/05/2017 19:46

We went for an evening meal as we were staying in the area. We found the hotel difficult to find and had to stop and seek directions? Surroundings were delightful but although the meal was good it was not in our view exceptional and my husband in particular felt the food was under seasoned for our taste. We felt that the attention given to the paying guests at the hotel was better than we received as restaurant customers?

Beautiful hotel

Stayed for one night with family and we had our evening meal here, its a set menu but as two of us are vegetarian the chef cooked something else for us, and it was delicious! Had a lovely buffet continental breakfast too. Rooms are beautifully decorated and very comfortable. Would highly recommend this hotel.

Good stop off for Cherbourg ferry or to explore Normandy

La ferme de Mares is a Logis de France and a Relais du Silence, listed in the 2014 Michelin Guide. The buildings and grounds are an old Norman Farm, with a large courtyard used for secure parking, and extensive gardens. When we arrived vegetables were being collected from the kitchen garden. We were greeted at reception by the English owner who is also the chef, and shown the dining room on the way to our bedroom on the second floor. The bedroom was comfortable and well appointed, with a modern bathroom, free wifi and a view of the courtyard and out buildings.
After checking in we drove down to the local beach 2 or 3 Km away. The were extensive views of the vast Bay of Mont St Michel and across to Jersey about 25 Km away. Shellfish were being landed on the slipway and loaded onto trailers towed by tractors. We stopped for a beer in one of the beach bars before returning to the hotel. The night was very peaceful.
We came down for Breakfast (0830 to 1000) and were well satisfied. Great coffee for me and a good selection of teas for my wife. Two or three fruit juices, various cereals to choose from, with numerous dried fruits to enhance them (figs, dates, prunes and apricots) as well as a choice of fresh fruits. There were croissants and other pastries, various breads, butters and preserves and a good selection of cold meats and cheeses. Breakfast cost €9.95 per head. Checkout was before 11 am and le Patron (Anglais) dealt with our bill. Room and breakfast cost €109.91. We had ample time to revisit the beach, re-explore Coutances, its cafés, shops, views and Cathedral before a leisurely return to the ferry at Cherbourg. Secure free parking should never be a problem unlike some urban hotels.
The hotel is less than 45 minutes from the Cherbourg ferries on the way south or back to England, and less than half an hour from the ancient Norman hilltop cathedral city of Coutances. It is a perfect stop off, either after the ferry to France or on the way to the ferry to England, and ideal for visiting much of historic, scenic and maritime Normandy on a more extended holiday.

An exceptional hotel and restaurant

We recently were on a bike trip of Normany and Brittany. The tour booked our group in the Ferm des Mares for two nights. It became our most favorite hotel and restaurant of our trip -- including our stay in Paris. MIchael Allen and his wife, Sonia Picquenot are gracious hosts. They have lovingly rebuilt and modernized an ancient farmhouse where they live and where they take very good care of their guests. Our room was tastefully decorated, modern, and comfortable with views of the gardens and countryside. Our meals were incredible, as was the service. In the evening we walked along the wetlands. It was the perfect compliment to a long day of bicycling.

return visit after years exceeds expectations

We were here in 2011, very satisfied about everything, and because we wanted to see more of Normandy decided to make this hotel our base for 5 days. Again we had a room on the top floor (2 flights of stairs, no elevator), very quiet except for the bell in the nearby church that reminded us every 15 minutes about the time. But don't worry, it did not disturb my sleep although I am a light sleeper. Somewhere in the past years, the hotel was included in the "relais de silence" ranks. The bed is perfect, the bathroom offered a shower and the expected mini shampoo and shower gel bottles. And a hairdryer I have to say. There is a small flatscreen tv, which we didn't use, a desk chair and a big chair. So the living conditions are satisfactory. But the hotel does not only have the maximum three "stars" for the hotel part, but also three for the restaurant in the Logis de France rating. This is visible already in the morning for breakfast, fresh and homemade products, but no eggs/bacon and the likes. The dinner here is remarkably good. On most days the restaurant is open for other guests, and a la carte dining is possible, but there is a proposed menu for hotel guests with appetizer and three courses, which is very reasonably priced and, more importantly, really delicious. I asked for (and got) the recipe of one of the desserts, a combination of poor knights of Windsor (or pain perdu as it is called in french, or wentelteefje in dutch) and homemade icecream of gingerbread (pain d'epices). The wine list is "eclectic" as the owner/chef Mike Allen calls it, with a large variety of reasonably priced wines from all over the world. Half bottles or single glasses are on the list too, but understandably the choice is much smaller then.
Hotel guests during our stay were mostly middle aged, and families with young children may want to chose to go somewhere else with facilities for the youngsters (swimming pool, playmates, other activities).
