Charming but pricey!
Lorie Lon 01/08/2017 05:56We stayed 3 nights in this historic old lodge. We were in the Lakeside rooms just next to the main building. The room was spacious enough to accommodate the 3 of us comfortably. The views of the lake were amazing. Note: southerners, there is no air conditioning. This was fine while we were there and highs were in the 70's and low 80's, but next week calls for 100! This would be miserable! There was a new flat screen tv and updated bathroom appliances. The bed and pillows were comfortable, but the sleeper sofa was not! Everything was clean on arrival. There is no mini fridge or microwave in the room, but there is a hair dryer and coffee maker. The guest services guy was very friendly. Unfortunately, we didn't get much in the way of room service-no fresh towels, no more coffee. Once we asked it was supplied, but at this price point, you shouldn't have to ask!
The grounds are stunning and well-maintained. They have kayak, paddleboard, and row boat rentals. We tried our hand at the row boat...harder than you think! They have free bocce ball, horseshoes, ladder ball, and croquet on the lawn, as well as s'mores around the fire at night. Lots of lovely hiking right out the door. The restaurant was expensive ($14 for two eggs, toast, bacon, and potatoes). We only ate breakfast there. It was pretty good. The parfait was the best. All in all a great place to stay with a timeless feel. Just be prepared to fork over some cash!
Charming Historic Lodge
JuliefromCincyon 30/07/2017 18:13We stayed for a week in a Lakeside room. Just to be clear, almost all the rooms are "lakeside". There are 4 main buildings--Lakeside, Boathouse, Lodge, and Fireplace. The Lakeside rooms have been updated and they were very nice for a National Park property (you can't really compare them to a big city hotel, as it is a different experience). The Boathouse is pet-friendly. The main lodge, however, is designated historic, and there is only so much updating they can do. I was told that the Lodge rooms (built in the 1920's) require sharing a bathroom between 2 rooms.
Anyway, the weather was lovely and the view of the lake was only somewhat obstructed by enormous rain forest trees, including cedars and Douglas Firs, which to me are part of the scenery. But the air smells incredible and the mattress and pillows were great, so sleeping was delicious.
Housekeeping was cheerful and well-meaning, although somewhat haphazard. (One day we received 2 big towels, one hand towel, and 5 washcloths!). The dining room, as others have said, is overpriced and not very good. We did not experience the poor service that others mentioned--I don't think the servers were well trained, but they were relatively quick and very friendly.
If you stay here, do yourself a favor and book into the free "Walk with Mary" offered by the lodge twice a day. Mary will take you through the rainforest, describing the different trees and plants, and tasting the edible ones. She tells stories from the native Americans and explains the logging economy. She also explains the life cycle of a forest, and how rain, wind, and fire shape the forest harmoniously. It is well worth the time, and I think most kids over 10 would enjoy it as well. And it's free!
Loved this lodge
Lisa Don 30/07/2017 05:45We stayed one night in king room overlooking lake. Although our room was very small it was clean and updated. We spent most of our time in the common area in the lodge or outside on the lawn. Beautiful historic building. Highlight of our stay was the 7pm boat cruise with Carl. My teens loved it too. Carl is so knowledgeable about the area. We ate at the Salmon House based on previous reviews and enjoyed it. Had breakfast at the lodge - expensive and just so so. I guess you are paying for the views and ambiance.
Great place to stay but dining room service is attrocious
troutbum2on 29/07/2017 19:07We loved our room and its location and view. The food in the dining room was pretty good. However the food service was extremely slow and poorly executed. It should not take an hour and a half to eat breakfast and then have to beg for a bill so that we could leave. Every table nearby experienced similar problems. We at 3 meals here over two days. We finally gave up and our last dinner was at a nearby restaurant not run by Aramark.
Expensive lodging but beautiful place to be
Kim Mon 27/07/2017 21:31. We were at the lodge this past week an had a wonderful time hiking and seeing the area. However, if I don't say this I will be very angry at myself. We were in a fireplace room which was very pricey. It was supposed to have a lake view which is why we wanted the room. We were in room 110 and there were plants and ferns in front of the patio that has grown too tall and we could not see anything including the lake. I made these reservations over 6 months ago and was very disappointed that i had to move chairs or use the ones on the lawn to see the lake. I wanted to be able to walk out of the room and just relax. When we asked to move to another room we were told they were full and the front desk people were not even aware of the obstruction of the plants. The gardener needs to take a few of these plants out so people can see the lake from room 110. We stayed four nights and the rooms all around us had no obstruction and people were coming or going. We could have been given another room for our second -fourth nights. Disappointed that we spent so much money on a room that did not live up to its hype. We also had plumbing problems and could not shower until maintenance came to fix it. would go back but will get a standard room overlooking the lake.
