Outward appearances were not promising and the hotel looked rather dull as we approached it from the road : the inner quadrangle was more promising, though the outside chairs & tables would all benefit from a good clean.
The room was large, clean and had a goodsize bathroom.
The restaurant was really first class though. We had demi-pension but had a good variety of starters, main courses and desserts. The salmon in a lovely creamy sauce was superb , as was the stuffed chicken. Wines were a bit pricey , but we had a good Sauvignon for 16€.
Decor was fine, though it could benefit from a bit of TLC in places ( some peeling wall paper).
On the whole, tend to agree with androo235 : a v good restaurant with an OK hotel.
Very friendly staff though, adequate breakfasts, and a good base for touring/walking in the Auvergne.
Thoroughly recommended.

The hotel itself is probably a little more expensive than it should be. The room we stayed in was one of 4 or 5 newly constructed in what was the loft space of the original building. Because of this these rooms have sloping ceilings and somewhat inconvenient shapes. That said our family room was big enough, the most significant downside being the lack of any kind of view from inside the room as the only window was a rooflight (velux), although of decent size to provide light. The rooms also lacked other simple and cheap features which could make a difference. For example, although the rooms had no view there was a bistro type table and chairs (cheap white platic ones - so these could be better) on a veranda outside the room which formed part of an inner courtyard open to one side which had some views of the surrounding countryside, however the chairs were a little dirty (the rooms were clean) and, crucially, there was no device to prop the rooms door open. Other simple additions could include hooks in the rooms hallway to hang coats and bags and a shelf or two in the oversized bathroom. We also thought that with a little more design ingenuity the bathroom could have been much smaller allowing the room to be bigger too, this kind of sums up the Hotel. It's ok but no better.

The staff were friendly and responded well to my poor attempts at French.For example the rooms safe didn't work and they did try, with good humour, to get it to work, but gave up with the gallic shrug in the end.

But, the restaurant is different. As soon as you have checked in they are keen to know whether or not you will be eating with them. It isn't cheap, though not wildly expensive either, dinner for three of us with wine came in at about Eur70. But, my wife eats like a sparrow so three hearty appetites could easily spend much more. The service was attentive and again friendly, despite this I got the impression that they were knowledgeable about what they had to offer. The quality of the cooking, the seasoning, the presentation and the ingredients were all very good. I have never eaten in a michelin star restaurant but I've had my fair share of hot dinners and this place is, I think, even in France, exceptional. We ate there both nights of our stay. House wines were good, even the desserts were prepared in the kitchen and clearly not just fetched from a freezer or microwaved.
