What People are saying

Enjoyable stay

Colin Pon 23/07/2017 13:49

This was our 1st visit and first impressions were good. Diane on reception was very friendly and gave us a nice Scottish welcome.

The hotel is pet friendly and we took our dog. Our room was large and had been recently upgraded. It had a huge bed, LCD tv, two chairs, plenty of wardrobe space and new carpets. There was also a balcony with a good view of the local park. We also had a bath and shower and we got the usual amenities of bath and shower gel. The towels were nice and fluffy.

We enjoyed dinner bed and breakfast and the food was excellent. We both tried the garlic mushrooms as a starter and I really enjoyed the roast beef dinner. My wife had salmon and it was really tasty. On a Friday, it is steak night and we opted for the sirloin and chips. They were cooked to perfection and it was a nice touch that a glass of wine is included with the special menu.

A big thanks to Brian and Tracy who provided excellent service at dinner and at breakfast. Breakfast was good and there was plenty of choice wth bacon, sausage, choice of egg, mushrooms, tomato, black pudding and haggis. All the food was cooked to order and was well presented.

The hotel is an ideal choice for a short stay and it is located only a few minutes walk from the main shopping area. There is also plenty of parking. All in all we really enjoyed our stay.

So disappointed we cut our trip short!

The staff at this hotel are wonderful and a credit to the place.
That being said, they cannot make up for the issues that we experienced during our short stay. Prior to booking I contacted the hotel (as I always do when travelling) to ask if our dog would be allowed in the bar and if meals could be taken in the bar. I was told this was fine so booked a 2 night stay. At check-in I mentioned this and was advised this wouldn't be possible. After a short wait, they confirmed it would be ok so we continued to check in.
Our room had a small balcony which was a welcome bit of outdoor space but the railings were tired with paint flaking off and really looked like they needed some TLC.
Inside the room was basic and the bathroom had definitely seen better days. Downlighter in the ceiling had no case, simply a bulb stuck into a roughly cut hole in the plaster!
As others have mentioned, the rooms are stuffy and really warm. Even with windows open, the heat in the place is unbelievable.
Dinner was lovely however the bar can only be described as a dated,
atmosphere vacuum and we did not sit any longer than to finish our meal.
Back in our room is where things got worse. Just after midnight, what can only be described as a party kicked off in rooms across the corridor from us. That's when we realised how thin the walls were. I gave up at 3am and phoned the night porter who advised he was aware of the problem and would go and speak to them! Made no difference and the party continued until the seagulls got into full voice........
Between the noise and the unbearable heat in the room, we didn't get a wink of sleep.
Following a mediocre buffet style breakfast, we decided to check out a day early. The receptionist was not surprised and had a list of complaints from the night before. We paid what we owed (she discounted the £10 dog supplement) and we left.
Bitterly disappointed and feel like we wasted a weekend.

Good

Yes this was a welcome change from the other hotels that Montrose offers, the ancient golf course must help. The food was good unfortunately the bar didn't serve proper beer only foreign fix however the red wine was excellent for the price.
My room was comfortable but very hot.

Weekend away......

My husband and myself were away to Scotland visiting family and we stayed here for two nights.
Our room was spacious and very comfortable. The bed was great but the pillows were of a poor quality.
All of the staff we met were helpful and friendly. Breakfast was of a good standard and I would stay here again.

This is a wedding venue and I was shocked to see dead plants in pots at the front of the hotel, this I thought was very poor and could so easily be rectified.....

Needs updating

Stayed here for 4 nights. Staff are friendly and welcoming. The rooms definitely need some TLC. My shower rail was hanging of the wall, the lights in the room not working, holes in the bathroom wall where they replaced the towel rail. Also there is no aircon or fan in room. So rooms are very muggy. Besides that, rooms are cleaned daily, beds are comfortable, and food in the evening was good and reasonably priced. However breakfast is very expensive for what you get, to charge £12 for a breakfast they need to learn how to cook bacon.
