Starting Renovations...

We stayed at the Lion Safari Camp in Early April for a few days while visiting Gir National Park. The drive in to the camp is a bit of a bumpy one, not ideal for larger vehicles and is about 15 minutes away form the park gate.

This was a tented camp, the tents were clean, the bathroom was filled with ants... we had to shake our towels off to use them. The food was average. There was a lot of oil in the food and my father was sick most of our stay there. We can't be certain that it was form the food at the camp or previously in Mumbai as it came on the first night we were there. They do offer you an option to choose form their menu if you like as well which is a nice option.

When we arrived the camp was very quiet and there were only a few guests. They were moving furniture and when we asked about it, they said that they were preparing for a renovation. They were taking out all of the tents and making villa type cottages. Things were a little run down, not like the photos. The games area was set up for the staff to watch TV and the extra furniture was stored in there so we weren't able to use that area.

All in all this was a decent stay compared to others. I hope the renovations do this place justice as the grounds have so much potential.

a BIG "NO"...

Good Location, They gave me a Good Tent to stay,
Good Cleanliness, Super Good Staff,
BAD to WORST food and restaurant Services That will turn your Heads Away.
MOOD SPOILER ahead…
The taste will disgust you. The servings are unappetising. Taste is Bland and unappealing. Will definitely spoil your mood and the whole day for that matter. The Chef Will not agree that the taste is Bad, they rely on foreign travellers who have no knowledge of Indian food, and will almost accept whatever taste offered to them, thinking this is India and people eat this type of food and also because they are into foreign land.

The PRICES are HILARIOUSLY HIGH for that kind of Food. they charge exuberantly and outrageously offering Zero Value for Money…
Its Rs.650 (+Taxes) for dinner Per Person, with just 5 types of items including Non-Veg; of course unappetisingly Served.
Nearby Hotel Lords charges Rs.500 (Inc.Tx) for a Buffet, with around 20 different items and over 10 Accompaniments.
Hotel Fern, Charges Rs. 600 for a Full Buffet, with around 23 Different Items and Over 12 Accompaniments.

For the Four Days We stayed there, we had to go to the market and bring packs of Chips and Maggi and Toast. We almost regularly went to the Town to have lunch and dinner. and yes, because its 1km of off-roading, the Auto-wala would charge Rs.300 for pickup and drop back to hotel.

Its not just our family who had these experience, but there were many other domestic travellers who had lost their cool, but am sure they were not asked to fill the Feedback Form. I asked for One. They only have feedback form filled by travellers who they think will not leave a negative feedback. But these time they had a professional reviewer at their disposal. The management should look into these glitch. and personally call their guests for Direct feedback. am sure will surprise them.

Dear Management, Have nothing personal against your company. But the way the hotel is conducted and managed, raises a serious question upon our ethics and the Indianness towards the visitors. The water bottle is charged Rs.45, whereas there is a Strict directive from the Govt. to charge as per the common MRP. For our businesses to flourish, treat Tourists and Guests with a standard of Dignity and Sprit that reflects the country we live in. Jai Hind.

Beautiful Experience

The camp has large tents with a sitting area outside. The have all the amenities of a tented camp and are quite comfortable. I spent three nights here and the staff was wonderful. They were determined you would enjoy your visit. The food was exceptional and the dishes were plentiful. It was a very pleasant time in the forest.

Reasonable place to stay but noisy.

The tented camp is away from the main road and in a riverside location. It should be quiet but there are a number of communal facilities, games rooms, large screen TV, etc. Many guests seem disinterested in the wildlife aspect and see it as a party location. This is fine but if you want some sleep prior to early morning (up at 5am) jeep drives make sure your tent is well away from these communal areas. On the positive side the tents, although in need of some improvement, are comfortable, the food is good, the staff are helpful and the place is generally quite clean. There is also a naturalist who will take you on river walks (there are four walks available) and he is very helpful. The park itself seems a cross between a zoo and a National Park with a definite emphasis on the zoo. There are a number of trackers that herd the lions around with sticks as if a flock of sheep. Not sure why they do this but they always seem keen to whisk them away from the roadside so they cannot be observed unless you pay them unofficially some extra amount and then they'll herd the lions toward you so you can see them! Facilities in the park are pretty non-existent (toilets disgusting, etc.) and foreign tourists who will have to pay through the nose for everything, seem unwanted there except as a cash cow (non sacred variety). If you want to see Asiatic Lions you have no real choice other than to visit Gir but otherwise it has little to recommend it and you should be keen to move on to other National Parks which are more about wildlife and are less exploitative and commercially oriented.

Stay at Mango Orchard !!

Vaibhav Bon 28/02/2017 09:43

A decent property built on a Mango Orchard. Have stayed twice here but i must say that the level of service is not getting better. They serve good buffet. Its a nice place away from the main road on the banks of the nearby river. We did spot a crocodile on the banks. Would recommend to people who want to experience something different than regular hotels and resorty places...
