Parking Nightmare
Sandy817on 11/06/2017 16:24We sent an email to inquire about private parking (5E), knowing it would be difficult in San Gimignano. We never received a response - and I wish I had canceled at that point. Since I didn't, we asked our previous host in Todi to call that morning for instructions before we left. No one answered. When I called again after arriving in San Gimignano and parking outside the city in the farthest lot, the person I spoke with did not speak English & unfortunately my Italian was not up to it. So we hiked into the city and finally got directions on where to park. We then hiked back to our car. It seemed too difficult to drive to drop off our luggage where she said, so, after parking, we dragged our bags up the hill. We were given an average pleasant room but the sheets were the scratchiest we have ever experienced. And the air conditioning did not really work. So we did not sleep well. Breakfast was fine but we would never recommend staying in San Gimignano with a car. We could have - and should have - found a lovely place outside the town.
Weekend in San Gimignano from July 29th to August 1st 2016
Karin Eon 02/08/2016 09:56I just returned from a lovely weekend spent at the bed & breakfast Locanda La Mandrogola located within the city’s medieval walls. Lovingly decorated, the four 2nd floor rooms are comfortable and inviting. Mine featured a queen size bed, a large closet (with 2 extra pillows, sufficient hangers and a dry-cleaning bag) as well as a modern bathroom and overlooked the delightful garden where lunch and dinner were served.
Breakfast, which was included in the price, was served from 8:30 until 9:30 on the ground floor: the choice was varied and included one’s choice of coffee (regular, espresso, cappuccino). The owner was kind and helpful and amazingly available throughout the day, the rest of the staff were very pleasant and the Coco, a delightful 10-year doggie (a Shar-pei) was always eager to be petted.
I had dinner twice in the inn’s restaurant and was very pleased with the garden setting, the choice and the service.
On the first evening, I ordered a small salad as an appetizer and raviolis with artichoke and truffles as a main course. Both were delicious as was the chosen local white wine.
A cake with caramelized onions and parmigiano sauce, followed by spaghetti with tomatoes, radicchio and pecorino sauce were my choices for the 2nd evening and I was just as happily surprised as on the prior evening.
I can only highly recommend the Locanda La Mandrogal and will happily return for my next stay in San Gimignano.
Good
FoodiefromCAon 26/06/2016 01:35We went to this restaurant on recommendation of the owner of the villa we rented. She lives in San Gimignano and gave us names of a few places to try. This was one. We went without a reservation, and we were only able to dine inside. The food was good, but the service was excessively slow - 30 minutes for the appetizer and 40 more minutes for the first course. I would go again but would make a reservation and sit outside. The liver and fig pate was outstanding as was the artichoke and truffle ravioli.
Nice stay!
Valerie Ron 08/05/2016 15:45We had a very nice stay at this family run hotel!
This place is beautifully decorated and has big and comfortable rooms with an amazing roof balcony with a panoramic view of the area.
Although the hotel situated inside the ZTL and the old city they managed to help us with a dedicated parking space not far from the hotel, a much cheaper alternative to the official parking lots.
Overall we had a nice time and recommend it very much!
Beautiful hotel
Helouiseon 25/04/2016 20:38The hotel is located inside the city walls but in a quiet location. This is a family run hotel and the hosts are very pleasant. We stayed in the Rosa room which is decorated in a feminine, vintage style with a modern bathroom. The views from the room are stunning with the setting sun shining through the window in the evening. The hotel has a lovely terrace on the roof tops with patio furniture for guests to enjoy the views. It is also located next to pretty gardens and the castle.
The room is spotlessly clean, has a tv, free wifi, en-suite bathroom with shower and toiletries. It has its own restaurant and guests staying in the hotel receive a very good discount on their meal. We ate here one night and had an enjoyable meal. Breakfast was continental style with an ample selection. Would definitely recommend this hotel.
