A Gem in Faenza

Bryan Hon 15/06/2017 01:47

Nestled away on Via Gallo Marcucci in Faenza, you'll find Locanda Paradiso, a great little hotel! We were in Faenza to visit the International Ceramics Museum and Locanda Paradiso was the perfect place to stay! It was within walking distance of the museum and an added bonus was the offer of a 10% discount at Baia de Re, a fantastic restaurant down the street.
The lady who checked us in was friendly and helpful and our room was tastefully decorated with a great balcony—definitely a hidden gem in Faenza!

Clean & comfortable accommodation in a good location, some things could be improved.

My husband and I have stayed here on three separate occasions, and overall we've found the rooms are basic, clean, and good value for money. The B&B is situated 1.3 kms from Piazza del Popolo, and only 800 meters from the International Ceramics Museum, although the B&B also provides bicycles to get around town, as it's a very flat easy ride.

We've noticed positive and negatives during our stay. On the plus side the rooms are excellent value, with very clean spacious bathrooms, private veranda, and free WiFi included. The staff are friendly, and the location is very handy with a small supermarket next door.

The negatives for me would be the noise. Paper thin walls and lots of foot traffic (especially on the ground floor underneath the stairwell). The breakfast as others have mentioned could really be improved, it's just a small tray with bottled water, two packaged croissants, and an Italian coffee machine. I've noticed others said they were given vouchers but we've never received these. The only other criticism is the last two times I stayed we weren't provided with remotes to actually turn on the fan & air conditioner, and the room on the third floor is much smaller than the others below.

I should also point out there's construction work next door starting at 7am. While this is no fault of Locanda Paradiso, it could disrupt you. All in all we've always found this B&B great value for money, some things could be improved, but it's a good option for a nights stay.

Bed and breakfast without the breakfast. An old house, great beds, very quiet but lady not terribly friendly.

We arrived at 4.15, to find that check in was closed between 1pm and 5pm. The lady came out and told us to come back at 5pm. We put on our horrified faces and she let us in. We managed in slow Italian, Spanish and a bit of English but I think we were putting her out as she really wanted us to come back later. We were in Room 7 on the 1st floor with a nice balcony with climbing plants and a table and chairs which would have been nice in the summer. There was a mosquito zapper in the bathroom so I imagine there would be plenty of mosquitoes too. Good big bed, nice pillows. Rustic wardrobe and some old style lamps. All en-suite, with a few toiletries. They provide you with those thin cotton towels which look like tablecloths, like some other Italian places we have stayed in, the best quality one was the towel you stand on outside the shower! Nice shower.

The breakfast was an odd affair, it was on a tray in the room; it consisted of two croissants in plastic bags, and two small cartons of orange juice, and then a coffee maker I hadn't seen before. We didn't touch any of it as we were visiting family so we had breakfast there every day. A bit disappointing if you are expecting something fresh. Other people have talked about vouchers for a bar, we didn't have any of those. The croissants were not removed for three days, so I hope they were replaced for the next people!

Free wifi with the longest password ever, but it was fine. Big problem was the three-pin plugs, I imagine it was old wiring? I can't remember ever using a different style plug in Italy before, I thought they were the standard European ones. We had to borrow an adapter from a family member for the computer.

It was cold in the room but the heat came on from 5 till midnight and it was ok in the end.

TV with no channels in any other language apart from Italian, fairly standard for Italy.

There were very few guests when we stayed there in November, but the 2nd night, another couple came and the owner put them in the room right above ours so we had several moments of heels clomping around and hearing every word of their conversation, it would have been more sensible to put them somewhere else, given that the place was practically empty.

Overall, it was a pleasant stay in a quiet building, with free wifi and free parking outside in the street. Shame about the lack of breakfast.

WE LIKE THE PARADISO

After reading trip advisor about this inn, I had doubts about whether or not I should have reserved it for my friends and myself. We are guests at the Paradiso now, and its only problem is that it uses the phrase "B&B" and gives out vouchers for breakfast at a nice bar about five minutes walk away.(I confess I don't want to dress and walk up the street for breakfast) We found the nice small supermarket next door and purchased fruit, cheese and other things for breakfast. We carry an immersion heater and make our own coffee or use the espresso maker in the room. The voucher we can use anytime later in the day for tea or coffee and a brioche. The inn is immaculately clean and the staff pleasant but unobtrusive. Outside our twin rooms is a square table and 4 chairs where the four of us traveling together play scrabble, not being much for nightlife and there not being much night life in Faenza. Today, Sept 29/12 and tomorrow there are musical events in the main piazza and a few doors down our street is one of the best Italian Restaurants we have ever encountered. It's called Baia de Re, and is open daily for lunch and dinner. They serve recipes from their family traditions and ones they have created with their own fresh pasta. We will dine there tonight for the 3rd time. It's a hidden gem we would not have found if we were more centrally located. The Paradiso is about 15 minutes walk from the historic centre which has large markets on various days -- great fruits and vegetables at this time of the year, and jewellery, clothes, and many other items on Saturdays. The ceramic museum is well worth a visit, and it's easy to go by train and bus to San Marino and Brigichella from here. Otherwise our 5 nights here would not have provided us with enough to do but when we return from a day's outing (we are four active women in our 70's) the peace and quiet of this Inn on this residential street is a pleasure. The little supermarket and the restaurant are bonuses.
