What People are saying

poor

wowby on 07/04/2017 06:12

We watched things crawling across the ceiling, the building is infested, the manageress is unfriendly and a cleaner walked in on me, without knocking, when I was getting dressed in the morning. There is no way of securing the door to prevent this from the inside. I would advise not to stay at this hotel. It's a shame because it used to be really nice.

Dreadful

This motel was poor 5 years ago, and I was dismayed when I found I had been booked in again for a weekend.
On arrival I found that the door to reception was locked, and entry was via the adjacent (and equally tired-looking) Costa Coffee and (usually shut) bar. I managed to get my room key before the receptionist hurried off for a shift in the coffee shop.
The key operated a Yale type lock, but there wasn't an inner door lock, and there was no way of securing the windows other than when shut completely. (This was a ground floor room).
The noise from the ancient, electric room heater was only exceeded by footsteps emanating from the room and corridors above.
Worst (and most worrying) of all was the inoperative electric towel rail. A staff member found the operating switch, but upon closer inspection discovered the wiring in the bathroom was exposed and the appliance had a red 'faulty, do not use' sticker affixed. It was unclear whether the switch had been isolated, but it was apparent that the rail had not been used for some time.
The stairway and corridor carpets were threadbare and the whole place was dingy and shabby. Surpsiingly, apart from an unsteady toilet seat, the bathroom was clean and functioned well and the bed was comfortable - just a pity the noises precluded a good rest. When I mentioned these shortcomings on my departure, I was told that refurbishment was due. Well, nothing has happened in the past 5 years, so I don't hold out much hope. If you are looking for somewhere to stay in this area, look elsewhere.

Friendly staff. Awful hotel. It like something from Total Recall.

Genuinely the worst hotel I have stayed in. It is seriously like something from a post-apocalyptic nightmare.

The one member of staff tried her best, but was clearly under trained.

Had to wait 20 minute to check in because the single worker was on a break.

The wifi didn't work and when I describe the problem to the member of staff she looked at me like I was talking Klingon.

The decor looks like it's from a 1970s infomercial. It would make the hotel from The Shining look avant guard.

The bath is large and sturdy enough to withstand a small yield nuclear explosion but doesn't really fit in the bathroom.

Staying here will only lead to regret and sorrow. Don't do it.

Somewhere to stay

They say photographs never lie, well they probably don’t when the picture of the hotel is probably one taken a few years ago as looking around it was not easy to see where it was taken. The website also show photographs inside spacious rooms, amazing what result you can get using a wide angled lens does to a picture, where as in reality, compact and bijoux. There are also show pictures that show nice sparkly bathroom, another room I suspect. Unfortunately, the Lodge at Leeming has seen better days and looked tired, from the flaking paintwork on the outside. To room that came out of the 70’s with the extensive use of Formica it was most definitely not 21st century accommodation. Although some upgrading seems to have been done with new panelled ceilings and reasonable new carpet. What can you say, other than its one of those Wonders of the north, you wonder why it hasn’t been demolished and rebuilt. It is a real shame that the complex does not benefit from direct access from the A1.
On positive note the bed was comfortable the linen and towels were fresh and room was clean. It was also a pleasure not to have copious amounts of laminated signs stating the do’s and don’ts questioning your common sense like the “hot water is hot”. However, in this case it was scolding and could have done with a sign, as for the cold water it was tepid.
On arrival, we found the main entrance to the hotel locked and the sign on the door advised us to sign in at the Costa coffee next door. The staff there were extremely friendly and helpful, although as they worked for the attached Costa coffee outlet they did not know exactly where our room was.
The hotel also offered bar facilities which was sparse on choice and manned by the same Costa coffee staff who admitted they did not have a clue of what to do. However, it was very entertaining and we did end up with a couple of red wines before bed as the beer pumps didn’t want to work.
However, putting aside the aesthetics of the building the one thing that this place does have is lovely friendly and helpful staff who were willing to give advice on how to get around. They also listened and took note of our concerns with the temperature of the water. Especially in today’s blame society.
But never mind the room cost us £48.50 a night and it was somewhere to rest up for my wife and I and our ageing Dalmation. It was also an Ideal location for visiting relations in Ripon and a little further north in our journey to Scotland.

one night stop over

Read other reviews and stayed with trepidation! The car parking is extensive and free for guests, and was virtually empty on a Saturday evening. Reception had a bell and a pleasant staff member directed us to our room. The decorations, carpets and some fittings are tired, but the rooms and corridors were clean and the bed comfy. There was tea and coffee and a modern TV in the room. There is a Costa and a McDonalds on site, the former quiet and the latter busy. Access to the hotel is via Costa after 11pm, but as Costa is open 24 hours there was no problem. It is dog friendly, no extra charge, and had some decent open space outside as well. This was a really cheap overnight stay at £50 all in, but with no breakfast. It does what it says on the tin, it provides a decent lodging for travellers.
