Great Hotel, Unfriendly Front Desk
Buddy Ton 17/07/2017 09:14Pros: great location, big room (we had the triple room) with a nice sized bathroom and vanity area.
Cons: Front desk service was disappointing. In particular, Miss Sakai who was on morning front desk duty during or stay on 6 July for 3 nights.
On the morning of 7 July 2017, I had to call my parents' room while waiting at the lobby, and saw the hotel phone placed on the front desk counter. I helped myself to it. However, there was no dialling tone. I tried twice to no avail. I therefore asked Miss Sakai, who was standing behind the counter. I said "Sorry I'm trying to call upstairs there is no dial tone". Her reply was cold and condescending "Maybe try the flash button". I replied "I already did twice". And she grudgingly took over and pressed it for me, and it worked.
Coincidentally, when I told my husband about it, he said he was in a separate incident with her. He had asked for wifi password at the lobby. She pointed to a sign, and said "do you see there". Again, condescending and rude.
This was shocking to me, as that is not Japanese service culture to be so rude and unwillingly. The Japanese are famed for their service, and we experience that almost all the time on all our trips to Japan. Miss Sakai was an exception, unfortunately.
Comfortable and well located hotel
priorityfoodon 15/07/2017 14:07Booked this hotel as my first choice JR Nikko Hotel was fully booked. Turned out to be quite nice alternative. Located in the Susukino area, the hotel is surrounded by many eateries and shopping malls. The Ramen alley is also nearby. So is the red light district but it is very inconspicuous unless one is aware of it before hand. For those with a rental car, there is an automated car park behind the hotel called Mitsui Re-park and the hotel endorses a discount for the parking fee.
The rooms are fairly spacious and the bathrooms are well equipped. There is no porter service so be prepared to take your own luggage up to your room. Friendly and helpful reception staff.
Comfortable with good facilities
Steven Won 10/07/2017 15:44The Hotel Mercure Sendai is comfortable, clean and conveniently located. The bed comfortable, bathroom is good with average water pressure and the hotel staff are very helpful and friendly. The laundry service is efficient yet expensive! I found the breakfast to be very average in comparison to the other hotels we stayed in around Japan. Nonetheless, I would consider staying here again!

pleasant and affordable
Sushi888on 10/07/2017 01:21For the price, I felt like this was a great option.
We stayed for 3 nights, and there were pluses and minuses, but overall the hotel was clean, spacious (for Japanese standards), and very well equipped.
Plus:
- Good location, next to subway station and in an area that is very lively at night, so lots of restaurants and shops you can browse around within walking distance
- Very clean, the hotel was immaculate everyday, which isn't surprising in Japan, but very nice nonetheless.
- Great amenities. The bathroom had everything from hair brushes, toothbrushes, razors, shower caps, and even a small loofah for washing your body.
- Great water pressure.
- The refrigerator in the room had couple bottles of water, couple bottles of juice, and another soft drink that was complimentary and filled everyday.
- comfortable bed, we don't expect king sized beds in Japan, and our queen size bed was comfortable for the both of us.
- spacious for Japanese standards, it even had a little working station that allowed my husband to work a couple of days.
- Right next to a convenience store (Lawson), so you can pick up anything you need.
Minus:
- The entrance is set up a little weird, where you have to enter, go to the 3rd floor, and that is actually the lobby of the hotel.
- It's not too close to the Sapporo station, you have to walk about 20 minutes. I wish I had known that the airport bus stops right in front, because we would've taken that instead. We had to walk in the rain from the station since we thought it was close by. FYI, Sapporo has good underground walking system, so you don't have to get wet or cold most of the time. Wish I had known this as well!
I gave it 5 stars since it was very affordable for what we got. I would stay here again since I found it very pleasant and the attention to detail impressive. I went off season (in June), so that might be another reason why the price was so affordable.
