Nice place discovered!

mv4235on 01/11/2016 12:44

The hotel is in an old house, well located, in a quiet place - the streetis full of other interesting buildings. The hotel has also a garage (behind the hotel) with very friendly price of parking.
Nicely and properly furnished very comfortable rooms. Tthe mood is warm and friendly, thanks first of all to the owner Mr. Krapfenbauer - and all staff! We liked the breakfast room - with a good selection of fresh fruits, bakery products and all...!

Comfortable and Friendly Hotel in the Old City

Johngrvon 06/10/2016 15:22

In the City Centre a comfortable clean hotel with friendly staff in a quiet and charming street away from the main road through the city. A three night stay in a nice room with a wonderful view over the lake and excellent breakfast. The decor is a little tired in places but made up for by the friendly and attentive staff.
If arriving by car in the next few months ask for directions because the main road at the bottom of the hill is being relaid for the new tram extension. No noise from the works could be heard in the hotel.
Be aware that the hotel does not at present have a restaurant although it is mentioned in places on the internet.

It might be ok if the owner wasn't rude and obnoxious

I stayed at the Goldener Brunnen for a week when I was in Gmunden for a friend's wedding. The property isn't so bad in general, but the owner -- Mr. Krapfenbauer -- was a rude, unpleasant individual throughout my stay.

I will start with the coup de grace:

1. The guy apparently has something against Americans.

At one point on my last night, I was hanging out with my friend in the lobby, having a drink (because he would not allow me to have guests in my room at any time).

After telling us he didn't want us there, Mr. Krapfenbauer asked us where we were from, and when we replied that we were from the United States, he told us to "go home."

When my friend's wife wrote him an email and said that this was rude and deserved an apology, he did not deny it and told her that he was sending the email to his lawyer.

Now for the rest of the unpleasantness:

2. From the first night I was there, he would not let me have guests in my room at any time, even when it was quite clear that my guest had no intention of sleeping in the room. So in lieu of having a drink in the room, we played chess and had a drink in the lobby, which earned us nonstop dirty looks from Mr. Krapfenbauer.

3. The last night, he finally told us after a week of dirty looks and passive aggressiveness that he doesn't like us drinking in the reception area because there is a bar and a restaurant.

a. Fair enough, but that's something you bring up the first night, not the last.

The service was so lackadaisical that nobody even told me in the first place that
there was a bar.

b. I've never been to a normal hotel that forbid me from taking guests up to my
room. At the hotel my friend's family stayed at nearby, they were more than
welcome to have people over for wine on the balcony in their room.

4. When we went outside because he didn't want us in the lobby, he told me he would lock me out if I didn't come inside by midnight. That was not a condition for anybody else.

5. A single room only slightly larger than a storage closet with a broken, noisy ventilation system in the bathroom costs the same as a regular room.

good location and good view

In the center of the city, a very clean, quite, nice hotel with a helpful personel. Breakfast not very reach but tasteful. The sleeping conditions in the room are perfect, bed, cushion and bathroom. You can take a walk to the well known streets.

Fabulous hotel with huge charm

This hotel is full of quirks and style.

In a beautiful building in a lovely lane the hotel is full of art and ornaments bringing it to life.

Our room was pretty basic, and the wifi didn't work there, but it had a stunning view over the lake which was a huge bonus (room 49).

Breakfast was outstanding. Smoked salmon, eggs, mozzarella salad, yoghurt, fresh pineapple, cheeses, hams, breads, granola, coffee. Take your time with it and enjoy this slap up meal (you won't need to eat again until the evening!)

The hotel is in a great location in the middle of Gmunden, and there was free parking in a street at the back of the hotel.
