Luxury Boutique Hotel in Edinburgh

jaypeaon 03/08/2017 00:40

So pleased to have found the Nira Caledonia as part the Small Luxury Hotels of the World. We booked two rooms and the hotel conveniently placed us in adjacent rooms. Our adult daughter was traveling with us for a few days and had a small but nicely appointed single room while I booked an executive room for my husband and myself. As SLH members we were offered a room upgrade to a gorgeous suite on the second floor next to our daughter's room. Although never guaranteed, we were hoping for an upgrade and was delighted with a smaller yet still spacious suite overlooking Gloucester Place, including a king bed (so rare in Europe), a bathroom with a tub where I enjoyed the L'occitane products, available in all the rooms.

The hotel has a welcoming and smart foyer albeit narrow as it was previously a townhouse in Georgian style. We enjoyed dinner our first night at Blackwoods, the hotel's only restaurant, where we found beautiful old world charm and decor with delicious food offerings.

After traveling all day to get to Scotland, it was so nice to have such a warm and inviting restaurant on site which also serves full breakfast included in our rate. Attached bar/lounge area made a pleasant respite for a nightcap after a long day of sightseeing in Edinburgh.

The city centre south toward Princes Street is a fair 12-15 minute walk, it's a further 12-15 minute walk to Edinburgh Castle. All of which we didn't mind as we enjoy walking around to explore, especially as this was our first visit to Edinburgh. We enjoyed staying in this beautiful neighborhood, which was a peaceful area to return to from the busy touristy area, often by a short taxi ride.

Highly recommend Nira Caledonia for its special location in a historic building, with all the luxury without the hustle and bustle of a larger hotel. We also found a special offer of "stay for 3 pay for 2", so watch for these discounts. SLH membership is free, so may as well join and get a chance at a free upgrade and a complimentary night at participating hotels.

Professional and friendly

We moved here from a guest house and it was like going to a palace! Everything was clean and the staff was extremely helpful. I was initially concerned about staying in the new town but it is so easy to get into old town via cab - we are a family of 6 so cabs are the best deal! I was also concerned that this hotel may not be family friendly but that was not the case at all! They were welcoming to my teenagers and toddler. They even had children's shampoo, conditioner and gel which was perfect for my eczema prone 3 year old. The breakfast and dinner were delicious. I highly recommend this hotel!

My room was very clean and comfortable. All staff were always friendly and eager to help me out with whatever I needed. The food at the restaurant was excellent. I can recommend the lamb chops. I highly recommend it and I would stay there again.

Nice, quaint Lilliputian hotel

The hotel is about .7km away from the tourist centre of Edinburgh and thus gives closeness to the tourist trail but enough distance to not be affected by it.
The hotel lobby and dining area is smallish in size and the room I was in was also quite tight for more than 1 person.
I had dinner in the dining room and the steak I had was above average along with a lovely bernaise sauce.

Lovely restaurant and friendly staff

This hotel is exactly as it states, a lovely, boutique hotel situated in the heart of Edinburgh. The restaurant has a unique menu and I would recommend eating in and trying it for yourself. We ordered the chateaubriand steak to share and it did not disappoint. It was absolutely delicious and very filling. The creme brûlée we had for desert was lovely as well. Could not fault the front of house staff or the restaurant/ kitchen staff. Will definitely be back again.
