What People are saying

Great budget accommodation - good for Fringe

Andy Won 29/08/2017 11:59

I stayed here for a business trip (at the EICC), was just here for the one night but it was great! It seems far out but there are regular buses and is still walkable into centre of town if needed. It's a student dorm building but very clean, tidy and quiet. I had a single room with shared bathroom but there is a sink in the room and multiple shower rooms/bathrooms. Didn't see anyone else the time i was there so no queues or waiting for shower to be free. You get towels and there's kettle and basic usual facilities in the room, it's not fancy but does what you need. The reception is 24 hrs so can check in whenever and they were really nice, helpful and welcoming. Breakfast is in a big canteen in a buffet style. It's busy but food was great and plentiful! black pudding and haggis was excellent but there is all the usual breakfast foods and drinks you can think of. I highly recommend and would stay again. Superb value!

Another lovely stay

I discovered Pollock Halls on my first visit to the Fringe and have stayed there every time since. Great location - yes it's 20 minutes walk to the centre but in a city where most people walk everywhere that's a small proportion of the thousands of steps you will do! I had a twin room this year with en-suite bathroom, everything I needed for a 4-night stay. The breakfast is amazing, plenty of choice and all fresh and hot, the only meal you'll need all day!

Great Festival Accommodation

AFoster44on 28/08/2017 11:45

Just visited for the last week of the Fringe - very good price for Edinburgh. Quite basic but roomy, clean en suite double room with TV. Only thing I would say is that the room was really quite stuffy, definitely needed the window open. Also the room keys were really temperamental, they took loads of tries before they worked which was quite annoying.
Breakfast is amazing, huge choice of food and drinks. There are a lot of people being served here so it's large and very busy.
I quite liked the location, right next to Arthur Seat. OK it's a bit of a walk to the centre but Edinburgh is a great place to walk, especially when the festival is on. Also right next to Newington and you can always get a bus or taxi where you need to go. We used to live in Edinburgh so do know our way around though.
Wasn't bothered with any noise Friday or Saturday and night as others have said. Quite an early checkout 10.30am. Overall have to give it 4 stars for value for money and the breakfast. I'd stay again.

University type dorm accommodation

Lorraine Aon 27/08/2017 21:44

We stayed for two nights and the reason we gave it a 4star rating is because the rooms are comfortable and clean, good amenities, large buffet breakfast included, rather like university style and quality. It is a good 25 minute walk to the centre of town near the royal mile and Edinburg Castle. It's generally a good location near the foot of Arthur's Seat.

The only problem is that it is used solely as a hotel now and accommodates very large groups such as bands, sports teams etc and these groups can be very noisy when they return at 2 in the morning. They really should advise a time for quiet such as midnight because we didn't sleep much there. Bring earplugs. It is not inexpensive either and I think I would try and find a b&b a bit closer to town.

They have small lounges scattered around on each floor with microwaves etc where people can congregate but that just adds to the noise factor.

There is someone at the reception 24/7 if you need anything and parking is free. Hence all the walking or you can take a local bus.

Cheap and clean. But far away.

Because I'd attended university of Edinburgh many years ago and lived at these halls of residence I thought it would be fun to stay there during recent trip to Festival. Pluses: great buffet breakfast. Easy checkin and out. Reasonably good security. Near Arthur's seat for a great hike. Minuses: too far from the action. 25 minute
Walk to royal mile. Buses not that helpful. Taxis pricey. h
