What People are saying

Excellent

Excellent holiday complex in every way.

Been going there for over ten years.

Great location, excellent staff, reasonable prices.

I can recommend this place for children, older folk, and young couples.

Very very disapointed

Not at all what we expected. The whole place was below par.The appearance from the outside on the landings and in coridors were a bit of a shock, white doors to the apartments were either rusting or had paint peeling off them, not a good first impression. When we opened the door to our apartment we were greeted by a strong smell of dog!! Not pleasant. They allow dogs so be warned, I saw an owner allowing his dog to foul grass areas around the building and they did not pick up.
The bed settee which is the only soft seating is really uncomfortable, the stairs are very steep and open and have a polished finished with alternate cut outs to make them usable, see online photos.
There were some strange stains on the carpets too, not sure what they were from, can only guess!!
On the plus side, they did sort the "shower" out straight away, it consisted of a rubber hose attatched to the bath tap, the maintenance guy fitted a new wall fixed head within a few minutes of our complaining.Oh and by the way there is no oven in the apartments.
We were booked for a week and seriously considered ditching the booking and leaving to find somewhere else but decided to stick it out.
After a day or two it kind of grew on you!!!!!!!
Definitely won't be repeating this experience.

We enjoy Le Boucanier: others may not.

We have been to these apartments 5 times so we must find them at least tolerable.

But, when I think about it, there are just 2 of us and so the apartment size suits us. But they are advertised as sleeping between 4 and 6 so it would be cramped for a family.

Location is excellent. We have always found them to be clean. The staff are very helpful and the WiFi connection is now excellent.

Vieux Boucau is a great town. But perhaps others would find it limited.

Nice vacation on the ocean

Premises are very well located next to the beach and the lake. Quite at night. Very nice view on the lake. Near to the center of the village. Short trips can be done by bike. Prices advantages with local renters (bike, surf, ...). Unfortunately, the apartment was not very clean !

Disappointing accomodation overpriced during school holiday period

We're a family of 3, just returned home from a 10 day stay at Le Boucanier in Vieux-Boucau which was our main summer holiday. The pictures of the apartment on the internet looked very nice and considering we'd paid about £125 per night we were expecting something decent for our money.

After a long 2 day drive through France we arrived at Le Boucanier and were very disappointed. The apartments are extremely basic and the decoration is reminiscent of a 1970's Butlins type chalet. The carpets looked very old and dirty, presumably from countless numbers of dirty sandy feet before us.

There was a bath with a shower attachement on the bath taps, but no attachment on the wall for the shower head and no shower curtain. This meant to take a shower and avoid water getting on the floor you had to kneel in the shower and hold it above you by hand. There was no mat or towel for the floor either. Towels are only provided at additional cost, but fortunately we had bought our own (other than for the bathroom floor)

There was no air conditioning and not even a fan, which meant that the apartment got uncomfortably hot as you might expect in the south of France in the middle of summer. Even with the windows open it was hot and stuffy at night and difficult to sleep.

The kitchen area was very small with 2 small electric hot plates which were not really great for cooking on. There was a small fridge with a tiny freezer compartment.

Finally to top it all, you are expected to clean the apartment yourself on departure day. Cleaning materials are not provided but you can purchase them at an expenisve price from reception or get them yourself from the supermarket. The reception are kind enough to lend you a vacuum cleaner though if you ask nicely! If you don't clean it to a suitable standard they take 50 Euro from your deposit!

On the plus side the room had a small balcony with a nice view across the lake and is only a short walk from the atlantic beach which is great for surfing and bodyboarding. It is also a short walk from a number of OK restaurants on the lakeside for when you don't feel like cooking in the tiny kitchen. The people on reception were generally pleasant and helpful although reception is only open for a couple of hours in the morning and evening. The complex has a pool table and a few ping pong tables but bizarrely these are only available during the day (when everyone is outside at the beach) and are unavailable after 7pm in the evening when peopel are most likely to want to use them!

We are not generally overly fussy about accomodation and if we had paid say £50 a night for this apartment we'd have accepted the flaws and thought it reasonable value. However for £125 per night you expect something considerably better. We stopped in Paris on the way home in a Novotel which was in a good convenient location and had a far superior room and included a fantastic breakfast for only £90 per night. £30 less than Le Boucanier for something far better in Paris!

I've since looked again online and noticed that the apartments are far more reasonably priced if you go outside of school holidays and if you are able to go then you'd probably feel you were getting a reasonable deal if you don't mind something a bit basic. I know you always pay more during July and August but to be charged this much more (almost 3 times as much) is unjustified for something so basic.
