I stayed at The Greville Arms on the 9th & 10th December with my family and it was a fantastic place! We had a very warm welcome and the staff were all lovely throughout our stay. We had a full Irish fry both mornings and it was delicious. I would definitely stay here again when I go back to Granard!
Lunch.... and the allergens list, or rather, lack of.

Today (Sunday) we visited this hotel for lunch....3 adults &1 child. Having Coeliacs Disease, I always enquire what the GF options are (if any). The waitress assured me that "everything" on the menu was, she had another customer in earlier, and yes, she had asked the chef, and "everything" was. I asked, could she ask the chef for his advice, because I could already see items that couldn't possible be GF. She got annoyed at this point but I persisted. She entered the kitchen and came back out, again stating "everything" was GF. I settled on Salmon in a mushroom sauce, veg and mash, omitting the roast potatoes that she confirmed were done in the deep fat fryer (which the non GF chips, sausages and chicken nuggets were also done in).
I can't figure out whether she didn't fully understand, or couldn't really be bothered to deal with a customer who has a genuine reason to avoid gluten in their diet. I might point out that the menu did not highlight any allergens at all.
To top it off, the waitress served my coffee with a whole wheat digestive biscuit on the saucer!
Not good enough in 2016....
I will never visit again, and will advice others not to either.

The Greville Arms is conveniently located on the N55 Midway between Athlone and Dundalk. It was recently taken over by new management and for the first time in decades it now offers accommodation. The hotel was once owned by the Kiernan family and Kitty, Michael Collins's fiance lived here. The bar and lounge area is compact in size and the walls are adorned with memorabilia giving a clearer picture of this great love affair. The four of us arrived at 3 PM and the lunch menu was still available. If you like plain simple well cooked food just like mother used to make it, then this is the place for you. I had the plaice and it was cooked to perfection, moist and succulent inside a crumb base. The sirloin of beef was tender and there was no fault with the turkey and ham. They were accompanied by carrot and parsnip purée, cabbage and creamed potato. The vegetables were well seasoned and not overcooked. The portions were very generous in size and we were not able for deserts which are also home-made. The bill for four lunches a tea a coffee and biscuits was €43 which is excellent value for money. There was only one waitress who was "run off her feet." She was super efficient and nobody was left waiting. Service was very prompt and she was very attentive, going back to the kitchen for an extra helping of gravy. Trade was brisk, she waited on tables, cleared tables and served behind the bar. If trade continues to improve extra staff will have to be hired or this girl will burn out.
No food - bar closed - Saturday evening!

Unbelievable. I checked with staff before 6pm Saturday shutdown...
"No food after 5:30"
"Bar closed 6pm"
"Hotel no guests"
"Too quiet to pay staff"
Is this a 'ghostel'?
Seems they've just given up on the hospitality business.
