What People are saying

Excellent location, service, comfort and value

PartyofOne2013on 27/07/2017 08:07

LOCATION: Excellent. A couple of minutes walk from the Markt and Rathaus (original city market square and town hall) with Ehrenburg Castle just beyond that. Then it's a pleasant stroll through the Hofgarten, landscaped like an English park, and a further 10 or a 15 minute walk (a fork in the path gives these high road and low road options) up the hill to Veste Coburg.

In the other direction, it's a 10 minute completely flat walk to and from the main station and bus terminus.

Dotted around in all directions are numerous churches, statues and other charming sights of historical interest. Coburg is a most handsome city.

ROOM: I arrived in Coburg by train at 4 pm and had originally gone to other accommodation at the Barenturm where a fire had caused smoke damage to the room with kitchenette that I'd booked and the alternative offered was unsuitable.

Thus it was that I found myself with wheelie case in tow at 5pm in a city I'd never been to before with nowhere to stay when I walked into the Goldene Traube, intrigued by its name which translates as "golden grape".

The hotel is set within several conjoined older buildings, all renovated to a high standard. When I arrived, only two rooms were available, high up in the furthest reaches which the receptionist showed me.

The one I took was like an attic suite. The decor in sunny yellow and a deep raspberry was so pristine that it looked almost freshly painted. The entry had a commodious wall of wardrobes (including a safe) beyond which was a sofa, coffee table and wall-mounted tv. The next room was the bedroom with a Q/S bed, large desk, two arm chairs and another tv. Beyond that was a big bathroom with separate bath and shower cubicle, good supply of toiletries plus plenty of space for your own; natural light flooded in from the bathroom window. The whole suite was squeaky clean.

It was worth the climb up the easily managed modern stairs to reach this eyrie in the sky. There were views from the attic windows in all rooms of spires and other historic landmarks of the Coburg skyline nestled among tiled rooves and plentiful trees. The views of the sky at sunrise and sunset were beautiful.

(If you're not amenable to stairs, other parts of the hotel on lower floors appeared to be accessible by lift.)

PEACE? An absolute haven.

WIFI: Excellent - simple log-in on arrival gave instant, uninterrupted connection for the entire three days.

BREAKFAST: First class: beautifully presented hot and cold buffet selection that was constantly replenished with fresh supplies by attentive staff.

SERVICE: Friendly, helpful and wonderfully hospitable throughout: from Petra and Martin on reception to the smiling breakfast team and housekeeper, everyone seemed happy in their jobs and pleased to welcome you as a guest.

VALUE for MONEY: Outstanding. The tariff was eminently reasonable by any standards, the more so for such high quality.

NEXT TIME? Definitely. Despite being summer, as sometimes happens, the weather was patchy during my time in Coburg and returning to the Goldene Traube each day felt like coming home.

P.S. I arrived on Saturday and left on a Tuesday: as is the case throughout much of Europe, most shops are closed on Sunday and many sights (museums etc) on Monday but careful planning meant that it was possible to fit a lot in. Veste Coburg is open every day but on the Sunday, amongst other places, it was necessary to fit in the guided tours (conducted on the hour) to Schlosses Rosenau and Ehrenburg. Rosenau was easily reached by a short train journey to Rodental and then a walk of about 20 minutes, the final half of it through along well-laid paths through a verdant forest.

Like The Goldene Traube, staff at all these sights were welcoming and helpful, displaying a determination to make your visit interesting, enjoyable and memorable for all the right reasons.

Nice hotel and kind staff

Well situated hotel near the old town. Staff is kind and professional. Rooms are clean, well equiped and sufficiently big. With this hot weather actually it s good to have small minibar fridge and ventilator inside the room.
Breakfast is also quite wide and fresh. Very good

2 points to know:
-few parking places, therefore you have to park 100m from hotel in public park, 10 euros/day
-Elevator into hotel goes from reception till 1st floor. After it is only stairs....so with heavy big luggage, it is a bit tricky

Very comfotable

I spent two nights in this very comfortable and quiet hotel - hotel staff were very friendly and wellness centre exceptionally good. Food and wines were excellent only let down by the manager in the restaurant who wanted to charge me €1.50 for a teaspoon sized serving of ketchup in the side of my plate - !!!

Very charming gourmet hotel

Though not 5***** rated (and not priced), this charming property offers an overwhelming rich wine and liquor choice attached to it's Guide Michelin Star Restaurant (reviewed separately). Most definitely a good choice in Coburg. The SPA area is newly built, but does not yet offer treatments.

Comfortable Hotel in the Heart of Coburg, Bavaria, Germany

Stayed at this place over a business trip to Coburg. Walking distance to the City Square, Closer to the famous "Veste Coburg". If you are either on a vacation or a business trip and if you want to explore the Bavarian Beauty of "Coburg" city, "Goldene Traube" is a decent place to stay for families/couples/solo. Rooms are mid sized, simple bed and bathroom, which were clean and hygenic. Heating in the rooms and comfort of the bed could have been better. You could walk up and down the floors using the antique elevator or staircase.Staff are friendly at the front desk as well as the restaurant. They serve complimentary breakfast which is reasonably well spread and good. And the famous Bavarian food they serve at the restaurant for Lunch/Dinner too is good. You could also go the City Square, where there are a number of good restaurants in the vicinity for other dining options. Since it is closer to the city square, i could walk up there a number of times along the cobbled streets of Coburg, which i enjoyed and as well as the Christmas market that came up during the Christmas time when I stayed. Overall it was a little beautiful experience for me staying at this Hotel during the Wintry, Cold , Christmas season.
