Vermont Holiday Season Still Greets You
Mark Mon 20/02/2017 20:45So I am a huge fan of the independent owner-operated Victorian B&B's that offer a couple of rooms in the innkeeper's own home. Part of the experience is firsthand stories of the life and times of the house, the innkeeper and the family who chooses to love and keep the house alive. Over our 3-night stay at the Rose Arbor, we spent some happy hours with Susie and her story. The house is a jewel, with only a few nods to modernization; each room in the main floor living / dining area is as it was, but for the many cabinets and curios collected over the years. Susie uses the space as a display for various and sundry decorative & collectible, most of which are for sale.. as is much of the artwork gracing the walls. She is an oil painter and lover of everything equine. Just be aware, she keeps her team of (rescue) Siberian huskies as housemates, but if you are a fan or owner of dogs you will be totally at home. These dogs are super friendly and we were delighted to get to know them; especially Dakota, who first to greet you. The dogs stay behind the child gates and Susie will gauge your comfort level before introducing them.. they aren't allowed in the guest areas. Other thing to be aware of is that the house has a lot of breakable stuff in easy reach of small hands.. we had to be extra vigilant when we brought in our grandson Lucas for a Saturday morning babysit. The other thing to know is that Christmas is alive well into February. But it is so cool to be in pyjamas, slippers and bathrobes padding around the house in the evening playing scrabble in the parlor by the light of the tree and decor, while the snow creates a thick white landscape just outside the house. This is an experience worth having. Final mention is the superb breakfast, each morning a different and gourmet twist on something simple, with fresh fruit and local flavor. Not the big breakfast, but just enough to get you going. Great coffee, gracious hostess, comfy bed, Victorian delight.
Perfect Vermont Charm
Blk_tony_starkon 29/12/2016 22:07This place is reasonably priced , a great value for Vermont! We had a comfortable clean room, a delicious breakfast and we got to pet the gorgeous huskies!! They are so beautiful and loving! The Christmas decorations were so warm and inviting! The inn keeper was very accommodating , the wifi was great. You can't beat the value! Great quiet location steps from downtown. At these low rates we will be back several times this winter!
Best Kept Secret In Chester
Marc Aon 29/12/2016 02:07I've been going to Suzanne's tea room with my family over the course of 7 years. I've always had good tea and scones. And we live in Germany and frequent England often ... so we know our tea and scones.
The decor is lovely and the gifts are charming. Suzanne's paint work shop is a bonus. Her art work has evolved marvelously.
True. The tea room is not gigunda. More so now that she has her paint shop in the main annex to the kitchen. But that is why you go. To feel special... Who wants to sit a cafeteria with tons of people and have so-so food?
The one thing that can be said is that the edibles are a wee bit on the high side. But then again, the old adage holds true - you get what you pay for.
For those who want to slow down the pace, enjoy a real tea room sitting, and take in a social chat with a local in the real Vermont, know where to go...
You Can Go Home Again
David Ron 08/11/2016 23:46These were my accommodations as I returned to the haunts of my youth nearly fifty years ago. The proprietor was outstanding, welcoming and attentive without being intrusive. She's a real Renaissance woman, part innkeeper, cook, shopkeeper, artist, equestrian, and dog lover.
