A bit of magic lives here

Randall L on 23/08/2017 02:11

I couldn't express enough how much we enjoyed our stay. The garden was wonderful and well cared for, the house was cozy and lived in and the store next door was interesting! I often felt that I had slipped through a crack and found myself at "The Secret Garden". Breakfast was served everyday and was more than delicious! 10/10 will be staying here again in the future!

Feels like home

We've been annual guests at Roseledge for close to 15 years now, and we're never disappointed.

Gail is the consummate hostess, providing a clean, comfortable and welcoming environment.

Her breakfasts are fresh, innovative, delicious and in ample supply!

The grounds are always beautiful, making for a very pleasant place to relax.

We've travelled extensively, and try to stay at B&B's whenever we can to experience local color, and have met many interesting people.

Without reservation, Gail and Roseledge stand out as one of the best.

A beautiful escape!

My girlfriend and I love to get away. Away from the busy city and day-to-day things. Roseledge was this perfect escape. From the amazing landscape as you walk towards the doors to the hospitality of Gail and Ray, Roseledge is a gem. As soon as you walk in, you feel welcome. There are so many cute little things about Roseledge. When you walk around this historic home, you get a sense that family is important. And this is found in so many ways including daily breakfast made just for you, not some buffet that has been sitting out.

When the weather is cool, you even have your own wood fireplace in the bedroom. When you stay at Roseledge, you truly escape from the daily grind and have a chance to unwind.

I would highly recommend that anyone looking for a pleasant escape stay at Roseledge. If you enjoy good beers, Connecticut is full of amazing breweries, all within a short drive also.

Bugs, Uncomfortable, & Disappointing Breakfast

AbbyNormal137 on 01/08/2017 22:52

Mid-twenties couple on a nice weekend away. This was our first time at a B&B and I will say that we will stick with hotels. This is a place for people that just want to sleep and have someone else make them an overly- priced simple breakfast in the morning. Their website is highly misleading on a few instances.

I sent an email asking about the whirlpool tub that was never answered.

Website says check-in is between 2pm-9pm. When I called the day before to confirm our reservation, she told me that she would not be there because check in is from 12noon - 4pm, we weren’t getting there til 7pm.
When we got there the path way is rocky and winding and difficult to navigate in the dark, particularly one spot with a dip you can’t see but you can certainly feel.
Arriving with no one to tell us how the place works was a little uncomfortable, we had no idea where were allowed to go, and if anything was off limits. There was no fridge for guests so I put my leftovers in the main kitchen fridge even though I felt really uncomfortable walking around their house.

When we got up to the room (John Meech), it was nice. The whirlpool tub was smaller than expected definitely not for 2 people. We played soft music and turned on the jets, it was not until the next night that we realized that we shared a wall with another room. And felt like we had to whisper the whole time.

When we got there, the windows were shut and the ac was going and there were chocolates left by our bedside which was nice until we opened them to find bugs crawling through. We found bugs in any drinks left unattended. A bug crawled out from under the bed, (there were zero in the bed though) one flew up to the ceiling. And several were found hanging out by the windows through the night. When we told Gail about this, she seemed completely appalled and confused, and asked us to show her.
At first this seemed like she was appropriately unhappy that bugs had gotten into the room, but after her not finding any on her own (because we had killed them all) she kept saying that she couldn’t find any and that it (ONE BUG) must have come in on the flowers. Really felt like she was calling us liars. She did re-clean our whole room while we were out for the day, which was very much appreciated. Although she left the windows open and in the morning we found a rip in the screen. More bugs the next night, not lying.

From the moment we told her about the bugs, she seemed very defensive and closed – off towards us, waiting for us to leave.

A bit of false advertising on their website includes a “3-course meal” and “gourmet coffee & tea”. They have a Keurig. Nothing that fancy, with half & half and water that is left out all day only changed in the morning. There is a baked good as the first course, the scones were delicious. The second course on the first day was a fried egg, bacon, and potatoes – something I make at home. On the second day there was caramel French toast with sausage and apples, this one was really good though very easy to make at home too. I have no idea what the third course is as nothing was ever offered after that. For the amount of money the B&B is I would have thought breakfast would have been something fantastic and memorable, but I was very disappointed and we nearly left that day to find another hotel.

Unique, Beautiful and Historic

We had driven by this place numerous times and even purchased some plants an got permission to walk on their property to photograph flowers, gardens and sculptures. So to celebrate my birthday we spent two nights on a weekend. Ray and Gail were very gracious. Homemade cookies were a treat during the day as was the coffee always available. A nice sitting room allowed us to spend time outside our room (John Meech Room) one flight up. TV was available in the sitting room Breakfast included fresh fruit, home made muffins, peach cake, eggs, bacon, french toast (this is a combined list for two breakfasts.) One of the most unique items in our room was pointed out by Gail as a "slave bed" at the foot of our four poster which we used as a luggage rack. The only reason we gave it four rather than a five is due to the difficulty (for us) to negotiate the uneven grounds and high riser steps. We take responsibility for not asking in advance for clarification about the wording "not disabled accessible" I found it difficult checking in carrying the suitcases up the path and steps and ten also within the home. It is a very special and old home which they want to protect which necessitated our wearing slippers rather than street shoes and lifting suitcases rather than rolling them on wheels. Recognizing our difficulty Gail offered other egress paths we could take to make the task easier. My desire in detailing this is not to downgrade our experience which was very pleasurable but to clarify for others who might not consider themselves limited or handicapped yet might find this physically uncomfortable. (Only three rooms all up one flight) Road noise a little troublesome in room we had facing Route 164
