ear plugs needed

Hotel ok and in a good position in centre of town [parking available], breakfast good and staff friendly. BUT !!!! there is a 'nightclub' type place next door and I stayed on a Saturday night [I don't know if it opens other nights]. The noise was horrendous [I can only describe the beat as totaly invasive] and you will not expect to sleep until the early hours and after a couple of hours sleep I woke with a hangover style head. Because of this there is no way I would return.

Better than expected

hetty57on 11/07/2017 22:08

Stayed at the Royal Hotel recently while on a coach tour. Having read the reviews here did not expect much so was reasonably pleased that the hotel room we had was better than expected. Yes it was dated but clean and all expected amenities present. The shower room was very small having been created in a corner but shower worked well compared to some of the others according to stories on the coach. The food was reasonable but plates literally grabbed from in front of you as soon as you are finished. I realise that there were three coach loads to be served but would have been nice to be able too draw breath between courses. Breakfast was the best meal and consistently good each day. Cereals, fruit and juices and then plated Scottish breakfast with good quality sausage and bacon. All staff were were pleasant and helpful . Free wifi is available and mostly worked well.

North Coast 500-

Stayed here while doing the NC500. Room very basic. TV was smaller than the iPad. So much dust that partner allergies started. Wifi didn’t work and noise from the Main Streets was unbearable resulting in sleepless night. The lady at reception was very helpful but I did mailed a week before arrival and got no response regarding electric car charging options . Won’t be staying again .

Three star and trying

Derek Hon 10/07/2017 13:43

Many of the reviews are unfair and one wonders what people expect of a 3 star hotel. It is an old building and has been developed piecemeal and obviously depends on coach parties for survival. It is generally clean and staff are friendly and helpful, whilst food is fresh and well cooked but unimaginative. My wife is coeliac and staff provided good information and a choice of dishes. The hotel could certainly benefit from a refurbishment but for 103 rooms that would require both a considerable investment and an inevitable increase in prices.

disappointing

Thurso is small town in the very Northern part of Scotland, I imagined it to be a sleepy old town, but a night club very close to the hotel spoiled that illusion. Noise from the nightclub and people leaving the nightclub in the early hours of the morning were very disturbing to the extent that I would not want to stop in this hotel again.
The rooms are quite dated, bed was comfy but the shower was difficult to operate. We were like most guests in the hotel on a coach tour. Most guests seem to have difficulties with locking the room I needed special training to master the locks.
Meals were very disappointing and reminded me of school dinners with little choice warmed up grub!
We mastered the maze of stairways and little corridors with out any problems but I could imagine anyone with mobility issues would have some difficulties.
Wi Fi was free but a week signal and tended to go off and on unexpectedly!
