Came for a quiet lazy-like vacation this time and although we had a slight snafu the day after arriving, we had a great vacation at Royal Solaris as always. I have been a member of the hotel chain for five years and have rarely been disappointed, just this once.
Following the issue we had, Mario totally redeemed them, but I will probably never come back to this resort again. The wait staff are great, don't get me wrong, however, the front staff, and even our concierge need to learn better customer service. The resorts in Cancun appear to have that mastered. We will fly the extra 2-3 hours to go to Cancun instead.
Another reason for us to not come back to Cabo is that this is our only option in Cabo and it is full of children. We have none and just generally want peace and quiet when in/around the hotel. So, we will likely stay at the Caribe in Cancun from now on, the best, imo, of the four hotels they have and hardly see children there.
We do stay by the nice adult pool when at the hotel. Alfredo is the best poolside server ever! I was never without a drink. Speaking of drinks, some people say they are weak, just order a double each time you order, problem solved.
People have also stated that the food is horrible. We have never had food that we either had to send back or was not palatable. You do need reservations for the restaurants, however, as a non-member I believe you can call as early as 9 am. I highly suggest doing so because they do tend to fill up quickly and it is very unlikely to show up and get a table without one.
They have tons of activities available for everyone. They have an onsite travel concierge to assist in any outside excursions you wish to do. They have several bars (and for members, an outstanding members only bar) and 5-ish restaurants. I say ish, because one is only breakfast and dinner, one is just a hut by the pool with pizza and I'm including the outside snack bar on the other side of the pool (nachos, hot dogs, French fries, etc.) There is one formal-ish restaurant, Marco Polo, and a Mexican restaurant, Panchos.
Do be aware that this hotel is by no means brand new. Plus it is on the ocean. Therefore, mother natures takes it course. I have traveled to Hawaii and rented a house that was completely full of rust. I have seen no rust here, they take very good care of the property.
I am glad that I purchased, also got a steal during their 25th anniversary. I would not pay what they initially wanted...I did give this hotel a 4/5 mainly due to some customer service issues. I have been to 2 of the 3 in Cancun and would give each of those a 5/5.
I booked a package from travel agent. unfortunately I had to reschedule my trip. I called the resort and they said they will refund the money since I didn't completely cancel the trip. That is very good news and it seems fair. My travel agent will call them and hopefully that money gets refunded back so that I can spend it at the resort... LOL. let's see if they do what they promised on that $700. I am arriving on 8.16.17 and I look forward to the trip. I'll modify to 5 stars once refunded! - Anthony
I just want to give a big THANK YOU to Omar Naua the best party host and best pool guard. You're honestly the best person ever. You made our trip so much better. We are so happy we met you. We can't wait to come back to see you again and have a great time again. You're the funniest and sweetest person ever. Even though we had a few disagreements about you being lazy just kidding. You're honestly the best we appreciate everything you did.
We went to Royal Solaris and were concerned about some of the reviews we read. Maybe we are less "fussy" but we experienced none of the problems concerning staff, check in, rooms, food, or any other aspect of the resort as reported by some here. Also, we don't tend to let one small item ruin our entire vacation (such as reviews I read where a place gets 2 stars because a room key didn't work one day or the elevator took too long to turn up!)
We were there for 14 days so got to experience the whole cycle of events and everything the place has to offer.
Good Stuff:
Hotel is clean (the cleaning staff work so hard - always tending to rooms, grounds, etc), well maintained, and enjoys great views of the ocean.
We had an ocean view room which also looked over the pools and complex. We are a family of 5 and the room was big enough with 2 double beds and a "pull down from a closet" 3rd double bed. It didn't leave huge amounts of room for anything else but as we were really only using it as a place to sleep, that did not matter to us.
We did not pay for wifi in the room as it actually worked better for us to limit the "screen time" for us all and use the free lobby wifi once in a while - a nice degree of being unplugged but with the ability to connect if needed.
Balcony was great to sit out on an evening to sip a beer before going to dinner.
On the subject of food we mainly ate in the buffet restaurant in the evening where they did a great job of having a daily theme so that the menu did not become too repetitive. It was also varied enough to always find something the kids would eat. We also liked the fact that they did not go down the lazy route of fries everywhere but provided a balanced offering with plenty of meat & vegetable choices. Also it was easy to choose to sit inside or outside to take in some ocean views with dinner.
In terms of the bookable restaurants we only booked Marco Polo and found it easy to book & the food was good. We cannot comment on how easy it is to book the Mexican restaurant.
Lunch was easily obtained at either the pizza bar, snack bar, or buffet restaurant (or all three!!).
Just a heads up - there are birds that fly around and try to cash in on any loose crumbs. Doesn't bother us but some people get freaked out by this. Not really much a hotel can do in the open outdoor spaces to control this as employing a bird sniper is not really a practical solution :-) They don't come and invade your table or the serving areas so it's not really a problem. On the subject of mother nature, the large fans in the snack bar also do a good job of keeping the flies clear of the serving area but as with any open air place in a hot country, you will see the odd fly.
Highlight of breakfast was Lucy on the omelette station. She is such a happy character and sings while she cooks.
In fact that theme goes for all of the staff we encountered - they are all really friendly.
The entertainment staff are also superb and keep adults & kids entertained for the day with many activities taking place either in/around the pool or out on the sand (beach volley ball, beach soccer). Special shout out goes to Robbie for being permanently happy and so enthusiastic with all the activities he runs.
The pool setup is good with a large main pool, separate kids pool (with slides), and an adults only pool. Pool gets very warm in the afternoon but guess that's expected with the glorious sun shining all day. Swim up bar is good if a bit busy (found it best to go to beach bar). Bar staff & waiters are also excellent with Ramon & Eduardo patrolling the pool area to keep your drinks flowing.
Drink choice was pretty standard if you've done these types of all inclusive resorts before. Local beers, cocktails, spirits, and red/white wine (no Rose though). Various Sodas, non-alcoholic cocktails and water for when you don't want alcohol. Overall enough choice for everyone.
Evening shows are in the main pretty good. They last around an hour and are either run by the entertainment team or they have other acts come in. Our kids loved the Disney show (despite my sons being amused with them including Kung-Fu Panda & Minions in the show as every kids film expert knows they are not Disney!!)
Not so good/Feels like they are missing a trick with:
They do jump on you a bit quickly after check in to try and get you to sign up to the Club Solaris scheme. We couldn't see any benefit in it to us as a family so tried to say no....it's just a shame they don't take the first no and you have to stick to your guns to knock them back until they finally take no as the answer.
Evening options are limited to just the lobby bar once the show is over. This place could really do with maximizing the beach/ocean view area as it would be awesome to sit out in the evening having a drink in the warm evening air with the ocean as the backdrop. Sadly you cannot do this as the bar near the beach closes at 6pm so it's air conditioned lobby bar only (unless you want to grab a ride into Cabos to seek out the nightlife which with 3 young kids we were not going to do)
The place has a lot of families and it crying out for some sort of "mini-disco" for the kids. They have the space in the theater or the main lobby bar. It could easily be held prior to the evening show and I think it would be a huge hit with the kids.
Overall this is a great place and we really enjoyed our two weeks here.
Yes there are a couple of things they could work on to maximize what they have but these are additional improvements as opposed to anything that takes away from the place.
Just returned from 7-days and I have no negative comments here!
Our girls trip was made by "Alberto" he made sure we felt safe and accommodated our every need! This hotel is clean and well staffed! I will return
Thank you Alberto for making our vacation an even greater/memorable vacation,... you love your job and it shows🙂
