Enchanting! What a perfect experience!

This Michelin-rated, award winning posada is in the middle of nowhere, but well worth the trip! Luyego is a small village amongst gently rolling farmland, about 17 km from Astorga. As another reviewer suggested - if you are within 100 km of this place, and have a car, do stay here.

Two brothers built this inn out of the crumbled foundation of an old ruin. They used antique stone, wood and iron materials that they researched, repurposed, refitted, carved and loving placed for our enjoyment. The quality of the construction, designed to be historically relevant, was amazing. In the process of collecting materials and furnishings for the construction and outfitting of this pousada, they had enough extra to open a 2-storey antique store.

Now for our rooms and the meals, because this is the important information that will help you make your decision to go here:
#1 - plan to have dinner here. We had considered dining in Astorga because some small inns don't serve dinner, but we decided to check-in first, and hoped to find a casual meal in the village. To our great delight, Posada Real Hostereria Camino offers gourmet cuisine that has been Michelin rated for 3 years. For greater selection from their extensive menu, call ahead so they have time to source ingredients. We did not, and therefore chose from 3 entrees. Whatever you choose, be sure to include sautéed mushrooms that are a specialty of the region and the house. Our party of 4 shared a beautifully presented mixed salad, baked cod, grilled lamb chops, delicious desserts, and a bottle of local wine. All of it wonderful, served in a lovely dining room filled with antiques, and we felt that the price was very reasonable for such an excellent meal.
#2 - we stayed in the Orion room, our friends were in Osa Mayor, the larger room at the front. Both were spacious, finished with pride (my husband is a builder and was so impressed), beautifully decorated and the beds, very comfortable. The bathrooms have modern fittings, but still retain an old world feeling with the old wood-framed windows made private with linen and lace, and fitted with with cast iron latches. There was meticulous attention to detail everywhere that you looked.
#3 - breakfast in the sunny cafe is included in your room price - toasted home-made bread, jams, whole fruits, freshly squeezed orange juice and your choice of coffee or tea.
#4 - Rueben and his brother are so friendly and welcoming!!

Sorry for writing a 'book', but this place was special enough to warrant extra praise.

A Wonderful Place Away From Just About Everything

I stayed here because I was looking for a place to stay for a dinner at El Capricho in nearby Jimenez de Jamuz. This was my first trip to Spain and I was not familiar with the area but the hotel looked beautiful and I decided to book a room for a night.

There's no other way to describe it - the town of Luyego is in the middle of nowhere. Just a few miles outside of Astorga, you head off on a country road towards an incredibly majestic snow-capped mountain range. The view is stunning.

This is a family-run hotel and it looks like a castle. Everything is period. I'm not a great historian so I don't know exactly what period but more medieval than anything. Staying in the Orion room, I felt as though I were some Conquistador stopping for the night as I lay siege to Leon. The room is rustic, to the period but with the modern conveniences of radiator heat and a modern bathroom with all the amenities.

The sons of the owner were there to greet me as I walked through the heavy timber door. There's a small cafe area in the main lobby, an opulent dining room and a courtyard.

I enjoyed a delicious and exquisitely prepared lunch of a fish filet that was perfectly cooked.

Sadly, I was only here for a very short time. I would have liked to spend more time in the hotel just enjoying the facility and soaking up the atmosphere. The town is small but very charming and I wish I had the time to walk around and explore. But alas, I was here for a dinner and had to head off to the restaurant.

There happened to be a pretty heavy storm while I was here but there were no problems. With an early flight out of Madrid, I had to leave the hotel very early in the morning. They lock the doors of the hotel at night but one of the brothers was there quickly to unlock the door so I could get on my way.

It's a bit out of the way but I highly recommend staying here if you are in the area. I think you will be rewarded.

Spanish countryside highlight

This is a gracefully renovated boutique hotel in the middle of a charming village. Rooms are furnished with an eclectic selection of vintage and antique furniture and original artworks (all for sale). The bathrooms are modern. The bar and restaurant serves great beer, coffee and a great selection of local wines. Tapas are served late afternoon. It was a little cold and we did not use the beautiful courtyard. The restaurant serves fantastic food- a little on the expensive side but excellent and worth it. Try the bacalao. The two brothers went out of their way to host the guests. Awesome stay! (We were booked by Country Walkers).

In addition to the excellent food and spacious rooms, we mention the attractive location in a small village surrounded by farms, the hotel's showroom of antiques featuring pendulum wall clocks, and the very practical and personal assistance provided by Reuben, our host, which greatly increased the enjoyment of our driving trip.
