What People are saying

A perfect experience in Kyushu

Chrissiemeowmeowon 06/05/2016 16:50

What impressed us is the obliging staff in the hotel. When we arrived the hotel car park under heavy rain, 3 staff already showed up to offer assistance. Two of them picked up our backpack and luggage. The rest opened the umbrellas for us and guided us into the hotel. When we stepped into the very decent lobby, 3-4 staff welcomed us and guided us to the guest room. They briefed us the facilities in the room and arranged for our dinner. When we prepared to go out after stop raining. Our shoes wiped off from muds are ready at the entrance. What a heart-warming and touchy service! 澪奈ちゃん served us the dinner and breakfast with heart and care. She introduced the palatable cuisine dish by dish and taught us a lot of Japanese. We appreciated for the hospitality from all staff and look forward to meeting them again very soon.

Elegant Stay

We spent just a night here to be close to Takachiho gorge. The hotel is small but it's elegant with pretty Japanese garden.
You can feel that you are VIP guest since your step inside the hotel. A number of staffs who sit on the tatami floor at lobby will bow their heads to welcome you.
The room is comfortable, the service is impeccable and the food is to die for. We try Takachiho beef steak here and it's so tender and juicy. The only downside I can think of is it's quite small and pricey. It's the most expensive ryokan among all 3 in my Kyushu trip. I like the hotel but may need to rethink again whether to come back because of the price.

Perfection

This is easily the best Ryokan I've ever stayed at. We only stayed one night and our only regret is that we did not stay longer. The Ryokan was beautiful and our room had a relaxing outdoor bath and all the comfort and amenities we needed but this place was amazing because this Ryokan offers so much more than that. A lot of thought and care goes into the service they provide. They also have an uncanny ability to anticipate our needs and they are exceptionally quick in getting things done. E.g. they asked us about our breakfast timing and we told them we might need to do a late breakfast. They thought about it, then asked if we were going to Kunimigaoka before breakfast. The were right of course and the next thing we knew, they had checked the weather forecast and advised us not to drive there because snowfall overnight would make the roads dangerous and that it would be better to take a taxi equiped with snow chains. We agreed and immediately a taxi was booked for the next day and breakfast was arranged to be served to us as soon as we returned. This is just one example. They were always thinking ahead for us, we felt well taken care of from the moment we arrived until we left. The hospitality we received here can only be described as first class.

The food they serve here is also something that really stands out. This is definitely the best dinner we've had in a Ryokan and we've been to quite a few. The menu was very well-designed. The ingredients they used were of high quality and every dish they served was prepared and cooked perfectly. The dishes had a wide range a flavors and dishes complimented each other. Usually there might be one or two dishes that we might not like but that was not the case here, we enjoyed everything.

As for the rest, as mentioned at the start, the Ryokan is beautiful. There a garden and koi pond at the entrance which we could view from our room window. The private dining rooms where we had our breakfast and dinner were elegant and overlooked a beautiful garden. The room we stayed in was probably one of the cheapest they had but it was one of the nicest traditional rooms we've stayed in. We enjoyed our stay so much. It was perfect.

Magnificent experience

Elegant and thoughtful in details. I truly appreciated my experience and wished I'd stayed longer. Kumi Sato-san, a very elegant lady, speaks very good English and is very thoughtful and helpful. This is very useful if you want to find out anything about Japanese culture. The ryokan provides transfer to the show at 8pm which we decided not to go to experience the ryokan fully. Even the toiletries in the room are good quality. There's a personal shower and toilet.

Initially I chose this ryokan because the ones I read about in blogs have been taken. It's pricier than most and my husband asked me if I was sure. However the entire experience from the time you entered, parking your car to being received and the gardens in the compound , the Kaiseki dinner, having someone help me tie my yukata sash to having your own onsen in your room.

Upon arrival we were served a tiny yuzu dessert, the best we have had. We also had the same assistant help us throughout. Although I couldn't get her name. Her sincerity is also authentic. I found the staff in Shinsen very genuine and sincere. I wished I'd stayed longer but we had booked another night in another onsen town. I'll like to return again.

Wish we could have stayed longer!

This is a lovely, modern ryokan with beds. The aesthetics are gorgeous and the comfort is outstanding. All personnel were kind and helpful, My only complaint is that we didn't stay longer. Takachiho is an interesting and beautiful town with beautiful scenery, good walks and hikes, and historic places. Even though it is hard to get to, we highly recommend it and then you must stay at Shinsen.
