Well placed, off road parking, a front door into a different world. We received a great welcome even some help with the luggage. Lovely house, Refreshments available during the day. Coffee maker, tea and biscuits.Lovely touches.
The room was just big enough and had a shower separate to the loo which was good. I have to say thanks for the steps up the bed on my side, certainly needed them. Bed was high up.
Breakfast was good, the only comment would be limited choices.
Its well placed to explore Newport town on foot and a short walk for dinner.
Excellent stay and woul drecommend.
Lovely B & B In great Location

We stayed at the Samuel Durfee House for a long weekend in November. One of the things that drew me to it was the onsite parking. Parking in Newport is a brute, and the location of this B & B is so close to the center of town that you'd never be able to park nearby otherwise. We were advised by the lovely innkeeper, Michael, that the best plan was to leave the car there and walk wherever we needed to go. He was right. On one day, when we mentioned our plan for the day, he suggested we take our car, but pulled out a map and told us exactly where we would be able to park at every stop. He was exactly on target.
The inn dates back to the early 1800's and is decorated per the period. It is charming and inviting, but expect narrow staircases and creaky floors--it's all part of the charm of the inn. Our room had a private deck outfitted with a table and chairs, which we made use of, even though it was particularly cold when we were there. The entire inn is spotless, and though I found the bed somewhat less than perfectly comfortable, the linens and bedding were top notch. The bathroom was not luxurious, but it was clean and well appointed, including blow dryer, toiletries, a light up mirror and a nightlight.
The highlight, however, was Michael's breakfasts. Everything we had was delicious, from the freshly baked breads served when we were seated, to the hot entrees (apple cinammon pancakes, spinach fritatta, Portuguese sweet bread french toast) to the fruit that adorned each plate. Plus, he bakes every afternoon to leave a snack for the guests in the dining room.
More than anything, we felt welcomed into his home. We did not get to meet his wife, who was out of town, but we can only imagine how welcoming she must be as well. If you're staying in Newport, consider the Samuel Durfee house for your lodging.

My wife and I were told about the Durfee House 11 years ago. We've been back every year since. Heather and Michael are the most gracious hosts one could ever ask for. The breakfasts are amazing to say the least. The Inn is very quaint and welcoming. The off street parking is a huge benefit as anyone who's been to Newport can tell you. We hope to continue our yearly tradition . I would highly recommend The Samuel Durfee House

We thoroughly enjoyed five nights in the Doris Duke suite. The separate sitting room with full bath provided more room and the extra money was worth it. The inn is very clean as a result of excellent daily maid service. The bed was the MOST comfortable of any B&B we've stayed in over many years of traveling. Michael 's breakfasts were outstanding and he offered a nice variety of options.
The inn is a federal period home so it is a little tight on the stairs and in some areas of the room but this does not distract from the overall ambience of the interior. Private parking is provided and absolutely essential in Newport.
