Charming get away
ScottKemballson 28/05/2017 13:10The castle location is fantastic as it is close enough to Cologne and Bonn or just the Oberbergische Land. The grounds of the castle offer something for everyone be it a golf pro or a beginner (it has an 18 hole and a 9 hole golfing course), or if one is a keen walker with or without a dog. The castle is charming and understated; the rooms in the castle are all uniquely furnished taking you back in time, the modern Golf Lodge offers sleek Scando designs with a futuristic minimalist approach without disturbing the amience of the location. The food offered on the premised is very good, though a kettle would be great in the room, yet the bistro is open late and offers drinks of both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages at a good price.
Minimalism comes to the Schloss
Daniel Gon 20/12/2016 07:05If you prefer modern architecture over 18th century opulence you will love the new Golf Lodge. Oxen architects from nearby Cologne have done a great job by giving the lodge a personality that is the polar opposite of the castle next door.
The bed is great and breakfast is nice as always.
A hidden gem
Daniel Gon 16/09/2016 07:29Schloss Auel is a very charming hotel located north of Lohmar. I've stayed there 205 years after Napoleon and recommend it whether you come to inspect you army as he did or have other business in the area.
If you come by train and feel slightly adventurous take the walk from Honrath which gives you a feeling for the surroundings.
Beautiful Schloss and beautiful wedding
Pompougnacon 15/08/2016 21:32The Schloss itself is a 5 star beautiful old castle, located in the Woods.
The room was romantic, the settings were beautiful and i must say that the food was amazing. Everything from breakfast, dinner, drinks, etc are still in my mind.
We went for a wedding, and the only reason i am giving it a 4 star rating, is because we were lodged on our first night at a modern-house that was about 1 kilometer away. There was no one to help me with my huge suitecases ( we traveled from Mexico with a baby) so i had to carry them myself all the way up to the house, which also had 4 bedrooms that share one single bathroom.
Once we were moved back to the main Schloss, everything changed for us and it became perfect.
We recomend it but make sure you stay at the main body.
Not the typical Germanic modern hotel, but a wonderful experience
DriftwoodNLon 12/03/2015 16:21This is a hotel you will either love or hate. Being a traditional Schloss, it's decor is in keeping with the age of the building and is packed full of character, with each room having a different theme and packed full of antiques.
The bedrooms are very comfy and clean and bathrooms spotless. Breakfast is a good selection of hot and cold dishes which are replenished frequently.
The hotel offers dining in the tea room , with a small menu plus daily special all of which were presented well and offered good value in a unique setting. For those who want a less formal setting, the complex has a Bistro attached to it where good wholesome food is offered also at good price.
Situated within an 18 hole golf course, the hotel is very quiet even considering it is sometimes on the flight path to koln airport. However in keeping with its age, the floor boards do creek a little but this adds to its charm .. As does the free wifi which has a password that hints at a castle ghost !!!! ( I only saw the alcoholic spirits whilst there).
If you prefer the Western Ibis Holiday style hotel when from country to country only the shape of the toilet and light switched change, then this is not for you but if you enjoy the experience of staying somewhere that is unique with character and are prepared to cope with creaky boards and no lift, this is a must.
