Bottom of the barrel

I can't add much that other reviews haven't already written. This is a pretty dumpy place compared to virtually every other Hotel with rude management to boot.

There were bad patches in the wall and paint. The little alcove where the toilet sits is so small you can barely squeeze in.

They charged my credit card on the first day of a 4-day stay. When I realized I could not stay the final day because I couldn't work in the rain, they refused to give me a refund. I was never told this and it was never shown to me in writing. I consider this a scam. Interesting to note, I went on to stay in that area and work for 6 weeks staying at another hotel. The owner of the Scottish Inn lost out on several thousand dollars just because he would not refund me my $45.

I could go on and on, but the bottom line is, stay here only if you have absolutely no other options.

Still Trying to Be Better

We stayed in room 120, a room with two double beds, for one night. New or nearly new contents included the beds and bedding, frig, microwave, hair dryer, TV, and carpeting. Adequate contents included the coffee service, towels, shower curtain, ironing board and iron (but points for having these), the window curtains, the lights (all were working!), the locks on the door (secure), the air conditioner, and the wooden furniture. Things that need replacing:
1. The ancient vinyl wall coverings -- probably the major source of the strong cigarette smell in this non-smoking room.
2. All the upholstered furniture (2 chairs and a couch) which were too dirty to sit on. (Clean slip covers would have helped).
3. The black grout around the tub.
4. The door (leading directly outside) which lacked any sort of a seal (you could see light all around the edges and hear noise).
5. The plumbing in the tub. You have to somehow make the handle "click" in order to get any warm water at all. My husband managed to get it working after 10 minutes.

There is no breakfast service because there is no lobby. We slept well, thanks to the new, firm mattresses and pillows, but when we were awake, the smell of ancient smoke was unforgettable. They may have to remove the drywall, too, to get rid of it.

We paid $89 through Booking.com and were grossly overcharged. This was probably due to booking the room only 2 days in advance when it was virtually the last room in Sparta for that night. Our bad. Sparta doesn't have many motel rooms, and one gathering or special event can book everything up. These rooms at the Scottish Inn are worth about $55 for two people per night, but beware of the odor.

Trying to be better

This is a small one story motel close to the bike trail really trying to be better. The bed and pillows were super comfortable. The air conditioner was fine and more important quiet. The controls were low and accessible--especially important for a short person. The bathroom looked brand new. It is close to a few restaurants. It included a frig, microwave, coffee maker, accessible outlets (on the lamp) for chargers and free Wifi (had to call for a password). Also room for an extra bed if needed. Everything was clean except the windows. The outside paint and room decor was a little odd and the furniture was old but sturdy but that hardly mattered. The only thing that concerned me was overflowing dumpster one door down (emptied the next day) and the guests smoking and hanging out in front of their rooms. Although it is a small town and quiet, I was slightly nervous at night and piled my grocery bag and cooler in front of the door and on the table in front of the window. An extra lock would have make me feel more at ease. For the price it was fine.

Convenient

The hotel was okay to lay your head down. It was clean and comfortable. The price was right. We came with a group of bikers and it was walking distance to the downtown bars and right across the street is a nice old fashioned drive in, Rudy's. It is also close to the walking/bicycle path which is beautiful with two covered bridges.

Underrated

We were in Sparta to ride the Elroy-Sparta trail and this place was perfectly located four blocks from the trail head. We also found out the hotel is just across the street from an old-time drive in restaurant and there is a great breakfast place (Dorine's) just up the street. The hotel is certainly not a splashy place, but the room was clean and had a fridge, microwave, coffee maker and a large new TV with cable. The price was also right. I'd stay here again.
