in desperate need of rennovation

stayed in july for a wedding, upon check in the receptionist reluctantly gave us a key while describing that this is usually the last room they let out but they are full so we cant move you, this set the tone for the stay, the room was drab, uninviting and miserable, the skylight over the bed was horrible, the room was freezing and the sheets were damp, we went back tonrecwption to complain and were promptly moved to a different room despite previously being told it was full, however the sheets were still damp, the room was tatty and the bed was like sleeping on a trampoline, at the wedding the drinks were extortionate, the decor was extremely dated and the "award winning breakfast" was the usual soggy buffet kept warm for several hours affair, when we asked for a reduction in the room rate we were told we had to pay and call the manager later, the rate was £89 which I thought was about £88 too much, so imagine my shock when it was announced that the usual rate was £109! I would not stay here again if you paid me, I can find better in Blackpool for £20 a night

A nightmare from beginning to end!

I stayed here the night before my wedding and on the night of my wedding. We had previously been to look around the hotel and were assured by the member of staff that if we booked the highest level of room they would be able to allocate us the large room to allow space for the me and the bridesmaids to get ready in. We had also confirmed the room allocation on the phone after booking and were assured everything was fine. When I arrived I was put in a deluxe room but one that was very small and not the room I had been shown previously. This was soon sorted (I thought!) and I was moved in to the larger room. On the day of my wedding I had a phone call from reception telling me I needed to get out of the room as they had someone else booked in that night. This was not what any bride needs when she is just about to get married and added to the stress. However, I was assured that I would be moving to an equivalent room (which if the case, why would I need to move at all?). When we arrived back on the wedding night I cannot express how disappointed we were with the room and the fact that all our belongings had been randomly thrown in to bin bags and left on the floor in the new room. Whilst the room was very large it was the most outdated room I have seen for a very long time, with polystyrene ceiling tiles, dilapidated and mismatched furniture and gaudy patterns everywhere. I do not believe this to be the level of room we paid for as it was of a starkly different standard to the deluxe room shown on the website and which I had stayed in the first night. The attitude of the staff and their complete disregard for the upset they caused us was very frustrating. I believe a simple apology could have gone a long way.

The rooms are all very noisy with poor soundproofing. I was able to hear the gentleman's phone conversation word for word upstairs and the loud shrieking of drunken women after the take that tribute act. The room service is slow and disorganised with 3 phone calls and 2 visits to reception needed to secure an ice bucket and 6 glasses!

The breakfast had a good variety of items and the quality was reasonable. The hotel building and the grounds are beautiful.

For the prices this hotel is charging I think the service needs improvement and all rooms need to be brought up to the same standard. I would not be keen to stay here again.

Today I visited the newly refurbished Spa at Shaw hill, wow was I impressed it was so luxurious and such a relaxing atmosphere, the staff were very friendly and full of knowledge and advice, I had my brows tinted and I have to admit what a difference it makes, so you ladies out there go and get your brows done, and treat yourself to some of the amazing treatments available, I will certainly be visiting again. Thank you Lynn Wrightington.

We would 100% recommend shaw hill for a wedding venue they made our day just perfect from start to finish the rooms looked amazing every time they got changed around & the staff was all so helpfully whatever we asked for they got for us. Food was lovely can't fault nothing apart from it ended.

We stayed here for The Open just last week and i must say it was a decent stay, however could have been better. The staff were very nice and helpful throughout our stay and also the breakfast was very good so no complaints there.

However, the room was very basic and average. Firstly, our door did not lock properly and it had to be locked from the inside before leaving which was highly annoying. Secondly, because of this problem with the door, when the cleaner came she did not close the door properly and this is bad especially when I had left my laptop and IPad in that room all day with the door open. Also, the cleaner would use far too much disinfection when cleaning and the bathroom would stink!

Would I come back?... Probably. However, I would ask for a better room. It didn't even have a window 😂
