What People are saying

BEAUTIFUL HOTEL

LauraWorcestershireon 26/06/2017 20:20

Booked into this hotel for two night break. Were given an upgrade to a courtyard room which we found to be just amazing. It felt very luxurious. An enormous bed and huge bathroom with his and hers washbasins. The room had quite a lot of furniture in - probably could have done without one of the chairs to give a bit more space to walk around but this was not a problem.
Decor around the hotel was beautiful and lovely views over the seafront from the lounge and restaurant.
Food was stunning and very well presented.
We used the indoor pool which was so relaxing with the subdued lighting and beds to lounge on in the quiet.
Also booked a massage as there was a discount coupon in the room. This was a lovely experience.
Could not fault this hotel. All staff were very helpful and courteous. Nothing seemed too much trouble.
Will certainly visit again.

Afternoon Tea

helensweston 24/06/2017 20:00

We visited the restaurant for afternoon tea. The service was swift and polite. We ordered 3 afternoon teas which arrived with a huge pot of tea. The staff were very obliging and couldn't do enough when we asked for hot water and extra clotted cream. However, our personal view was that we would have preferred more sandwiches and less cake. The next time we visit we will make sure we ask for more sandwiches and less cake. Thank you for making my mother in laws birthday special.

Spoiled by poor sevice

So much has been done to turn The Westcliff into The Harbour Hotel. The interior (I have not seen beyond the restaurant and deck) is fresh and attractive. The restaurant area is inviting with good ambiance. The deck area is spacious and the views are stunning. What a shame that the service does not match up.
I visited on Father's Day for lunch. We were, helpfully, seated on the deck (usually not available for restaurant meals) and my wife's need for gluten free food was well catered for. However, on arrival I had to talk to three staff before anyone could deal with us at all. It was a problem putting our pre meal drinks onto our bill (when I got the bill the drinks weren't included and I was told 'this is always happening').
I had to go back into the restaurant to get someone to give us the desssert menu after a very long wait and then no one came to take our order.
On top of this, being Fathers Day, my son had arranged, by phone, to pay for our drinks. This never happened, so both he and I were disappointed.
Our experience was that a good deal of investment was required to bring service up to a standard that matched the rest of the hotel.

This has all the makings of a first class hotel but!!!

We have a house in Beer and have now visited the hotel on a number of occasions with friends and business clients each time hoping for an improvement in the service.
Unfortunately each time it's been a complete shambles. Under trained staff and a restaurant manager running round like a headless chicken, serving at tables himself.
Numerous people this week were complaining about the service but nobody seems to be in charge. The waiters and waitresses are all under trained and can't be blamed for the chaos.
This hotel should be superb. The interior and decor is fantastic and it all looks so promising,so for goodness sake management, get your act together!
Sidmouth was crying out for an innovative, modern, cutting edge hotel, it could be fantastic!

Disappointing stay - do not recommend

My partner and I visited Sidmouth Harbour hotel with another couple for a bank holiday weekend. The interior was pleasing and the view from the grounds was pretty, unfortunately that's where the positives ended for us.

We booked a superior room and paid over 500 GBP for 2 nights. The room was tiny with no seating area and the balcony was so small the door could not open properly because the chairs were in the way. Moreover, the view was spoilt by the white decking of the roof of ground floor. Not as per the beautiful picture I saw when booking the hotel!

The service was poor throughout the stay. Very (!) slow breakfast service (1.5 hours). The staff brought the wrong dishes a couple of times. Had to constantly remind the waiters and managers what we were missing from the order. We waited for coffee for about 20 - 30 mins. To my 3rd request/reminder re this, the manager informed me that they are catering for wedding guests, which should not be my issue. The poached eggs were hard boiled on several occasions. While seated in the afternoon at the bar area on many occasions, not once did the waiter come up to us to take orders or take away empty glasses. Dinner was ok, nothing memorable but not bad either.

Overall, very frustrating experience and not the relaxing break we were hoping for. Moreover, hugely overpriced for what it was. Staff were not very friendly and need proper training, as do the managers so it seems.
