What People are saying

Beyond Help

During a trip East to visit family in Vermont, we stayed at the Silas Griffith Inn for one night. The Management was friendly and helpful, but that's where it ends. Very run down, paint peeling, carpet dirty, very very musty and smelly. The bed was lumpy, hard and the sheets had stains on them. It was obvious that they had not changed the sheets or pillowcases. The bathroom towels were old and had bleach stains white spots. Breakfast was OK but the pancakes were not completely cooked with the inside doughy. Their Web site was very deceiving with great looking pictures. This was our 1st every stay at an Inn Bed & Breakfast and I'm not sure we'll try again.

Creepy and Awesome

I will be honest, driving up, we were a touch concerned.

It had a bit of an Adams Family feeling. And the paint was chipping. Upon entry it wasn't much different, the decor was turn of the century with porcelain dolls and a ton of teddy bears. Not what I was expecting at all.

However. With that said, the host was amazing. So personable, so helpful, so interesting and full of knowledge. And she cooked a wonderful breakfast.

The Silas Inn ended up being our favorite spot overall during our week in Vermont. Creepy and all. I wish I could stay again before they sell the place.

Thankfully we found out about it being on ghost hunters after our stay. But that fact also makes it gloriously creepy.

Book Covers Can Deceive

You can't judge a book by its cover and you can't always judge a B&B by the exterior appearance. First impression is that Silas Griffith Inn is badly in need of an exterior paint job. Don't let this put you off. I was met by Cathie, the proprietress, who is an exceedingly friendly and welcoming woman. She showed me to my room over Emma's dining area; the room was clean, comfortable and well-appointed. Obviously the innkeepers have invested in the interior instead of the exterior. My room opened to a patio with field beyond it that gave a lovely view. I enjoyed a good night's sleep because the inn is located well off the main highway and very quiet.
Waking up the next morning I recognized the value in staying here. There is a breakfast menu in Emma's, but you don't need it. Just ask Cathie for what you want and if she has it in the kitchen she will prepare it for you. You want something more, just ask for it. And along with breakfast I got lot of information on local history and just about everything else. I was in Vermont to hike a section of the Long Trail and Cathie offered to help spot my car at the end point and then take me to my trailhead 10 miles further north; this she did for a small and reasonable fee.

The inn is now for sale. I only hope that Cathie finds someone who will love the property and invest in that paint job it needs. And I hope that any new owner will be as caring of her guests as Cathie has been.

Cozy house in Vermont

Volynskayaon 25/02/2016 20:50

Silas Griffith Inn is very small inn, actually a B&B. The owner Cathy is extremely nice, friendly, creative and wonderful host. She cooks very original and tasty food for breakfast and every guest is cared for with special attention. The house is old and full of history, but also cozy and welcoming. Don't expect to find polished perfection there, as it has its own personality. It was nice to have a fridge, microwave and kettle in the common area. We also enjoyed a fireplace in our room. It was around a 40 min drive from Okemo and Stratton Ski areas, 20 min from the mall and lots of great restaurants.

Absolutely Wonderful.

I actually am appalled by some of the poor reviews left here by people. Yes, the inn is old and in need of some repairs, but a.) I don't really think people understand the amount of money it takes to completely renovate a building of that size...especially when it is most likely taxed to all hell b.) When you're vacationing in an area this beautiful and historical...you shouldn't even be watching television, let alone complaining about something so insipid as a lack of cable and c.) It's this type of wear & tear that make the Inn totally befitting of not only its history but also the incredible history of the area it's located in...which dates back to the 1700's. If you are so put off by a bit of dust & creaks in the floorboards, book a room at the nearest Hilton or go back to your ticky tacky development housing. You don't know "dirty" until you have been living on the Appalachian Trail (or any deep forest trail) for days on end.

My boyfriend and I staggered off of the AT in search of food and a hot shower, and the miles we walked and the money we paid to stay here were more than worth it.

Cathy is one of those rare people you have the pleasure of meeting once in a great while, who is genuine, entertaining and knowledgeable about everything. The Inn is beautiful and wonderfully kitschy, with each room in the main reception area boasting different antiques, trinkets, books and games. She's honest and so endearingly helpful, a business owner who legitimately appreciates your business and is invested in knowing you and what she can do to help....something that is NOT inherent in large hotel chains. When we inquired where we could purchase white gas for our camp stove, she offered to fill up our container for free with some that she had. When we mentioned that we were going to walk down onto Route 7 to get some food, she offered to give us a ride. This would never have happened at the Hampton Inn.

Our room was clean and cute with a balcony that overlooked the mountains and ran to the back off the building, where we were encouraged to pick at the tasty brambles of raspberries. The wifi was strong as was the a/c (a welcomed comfort after days of humidity on the Trail). The Inn is green, and she even had Boca sausage and almond milk stocked for our veg proclivities.

The town of Danby is a beautiful little speck of antiquity that is worth exploring, and the people have all been nothing but friendly and informative.

Perhaps it is the hiker / traveler in me that is a sucker for a great person with a great story, but this place is filled to the brim with both. I honestly can not say enough good things and will absolutely be back. I hope more people who appreciate and seek out the smart, offbeat and historic will book a stay here for a night or two. Both she and this fantastic building deserve all of the patronage they receive.
