Small traditional hotel in rural Spain

Katherine Eon 10/07/2016 10:30

This is a small traditional hotel in a hamlet just outside L'Espluga di Francoli. Our room was a reasonable size with a Juliette balcony ( there are no rooms with full balconies). The shower room was a good size and well appointed. It is all very clean and well managed. The restaurant serves excellent food. We were on half board and as such the evening meal for us was a selection of dishes from the main menu. Most mornings the breakfast ( a good selection and nicely presented) was served on the terrace which overlooks the garden and views of distant hills. The owners were very pleasant, friendly and helpful.
We stayed at Masia del Cadet for a week which gave us the opportunity to explore the attractive countryside, local towns and sights. The hotel is half a mile from the Poblet monastery which is on La Ruta del Cister, a group of 3 Cistercian monasteries. There are the caves and wineries in L'Espluga and also walks through vineyards and the hillsides. In all a pleasant and interesting area.

Fawlty Towers in Spain

JandJFarnhamCommonon 29/05/2015 19:23

Arriving in L’Espluga de Francoli was rather like entering ‘Stepford’; the advice given at the i did not transpire into the expectation; in fact, it was cras in as much that, despite our request for information re hotels and a place for dinner, we were never told about the excellent abodes that existed outside the drab town of L’Espluga de Francoli eg Monestir de Santa Maria de Poblet provided an excellent Hotel and even better dinner. Hotel Masia del Cadet has a wonderful terrace especially in the early evening as the sun sets but as the evening wore on, the whole place took-on a resemblance of Fawlty Towers; its owner and Manager was a mirror image of the thespian John Cleese. Choosing dinner from the menu was theatre in itself not only for us but for the other meagre 3 resident couples (mostly German) who clearly ‘enjoyed’ the process of choosing not only what they wanted to eat but what they were told they were going to get!! Rooms are impoverished (203), dinner was almost intolerable – twice the wrong beer was served; the veal was raw; the prawns were few and difficult to find on the plate; the chips weren’t cooked through and the cost was excessive. Wifi did not work in room 203 but was excellent in the lounge. The shower was broken; there was no pressure in the handbasin taps and no plug; we asked for a double room and got a twin. Despite breakfast not being served till 9am the lady (another mirror image, this time of John Cleese’s wife) was the last bastion of ‘something good’ about this strange place. We recommend you choose the Monestir de Santa Maria de Poblet only just down the road.

good hotel, air conditioned, fine restaurant

Bardangason 21/08/2013 18:43

we were heading for the Poblet Monastery minimalist luxury 'lodge' and chose the above instead, because the former lacked air conditioning in the spartan stylist minimalist rooms. The HMdelC reminded us of mediterranean 1960's historic architecture. The gentleman in charge was articulate, no nonsense and very prompt as to what he offered. The room a bit old fashioned bit bathroom and A/C were good and breakfast and dinner more than adequate (not part of the room charge) and the crowd on the verandah (that is the clientele) very sympathetic- August sunset, fine wine, a bit expensive

Nice Hotel, Good Location, Rather Expensive

We stayed at the Hotel la Masia del Cadet for one night whilst travelling across Spain with our Jack Russell terrier. The location is idyllic; on the Cister Route and close to the Poblet monastery. We walked around the peaceful village and enjoyed the panoramic views and a lovely sunset.

There is ample parking. We arrived in mid-September and were the only guests. The rooms are spacious and comfortable. We had a first floor room with a small courtyard.

We ate in the restaurant and the food was good; although the portions were a bit on the small side.

The only downside was the whopping €25 we were charged for our dog. By comparison, prices in other hotels ranged from zero to €10 for this service.

So, in summary, we think Hotel la Masia del Cade is well worth a visit but be aware of the canine 'Servei Habticio'.

Good location for the monastery.

We turned up unannounced as the Villa Engracia apartment we had booked next door was a huge disappointment. The outdoor terrace is delightful and the room was more than adequate. We had heard a lot about the restaurant and perhaps were expecting too much. My meal was good but my wife´s shoulder of lamb was overcooked with very little meat which was disappointing after some lovely "nibbles" and an excellent starter. When mentioned to the owner/waiter, this was clearly not important.

Be careful if you have a dog as they charge 25 (yes 25!!) euros per night, the most we have ever had to pay. This seemed odd as they are dog lovers with their own lovely rescue dog. For this reason we moved on after one night.
