What People are saying

Location is great, hotel is...quirky

Hanzosbmon 23/05/2017 00:15

My wife and I booked the gold suite for our honeymoon. First of all, the room was huge, the views were amazing, and the location can't be beat. I don't think anyone could argue any of those points.

Now for the downsides. None of these were a BIG deal, just lots of little things.

It seems that there is only staff on premises for a few hours each morning during their official check-in/check-out hours. I was concerned about this as our train was arriving around 2pm, and that was past their stated check-in hours. I emailed the hotel and was told not to worry, I could arrive anytime. Well...yeah...that was sorta true. If you arrive outside of the "normal" hours, you are given a phone number to call. Thankfully, we had an international calling plan on our phones, otherwise, we would've been screwed. The way it works is, you call the number, it's an automated service where you type in your code, it then unlocks the door for you. That means you have to be standing at the door when you do this, so a payphone isn't going to work. It also is not a fast process and it happened to be raining while we were doing this.
Once you open the front door off of the main piazza, you are immediately faced with a rather large flight of stairs. Hope your suitcase isn't too heavy. After the first flight, there is an elevator to take you up one additional level. When you get to the door, there is a keypad to enter another code to get you into the hotel itself. When we arrived, the place was empty. Walking down the hallway to our room, we could see that the key was in the door. So...yeah, you CAN arrive outside of the normal check-in hours.

Once inside, the room is huge. The windows open, but they are old windows, so they do not insulate much in terms of temperature or noise. People WILL be making noise at very late hours on the piazza and you will hear it. We didn't mind, but be aware of it. Also, the furnishings are a bit tired. They were clean, so not a big deal to us, but it seemed like a shame to have this amazing old building and not have the furnishings kept up. The bed wasn't terribly comfortable, but it was a place to sleep. The TV was laughably small. I'm not kidding, the screen on my laptop is bigger, and when you add to that that it's on the other side of the room in the corner, it starts to feel like the only reason it was in the room is so they could say that you had a TV in your room. We had no intension of watching TV anyway, so again, it didn't really matter. Also, the so called breakfast was also a bit of a joke. It was a tray of snacks that looked like it came out of a vending machine (I'm not kidding) and you were charged for anything you took. We decided to go out to breakfast each day. There is also a sign up that says that cleaning is included on the third day, but additional cleaning services would result in a charge (a small charge, but one nonetheless). For this reason, we hung the 'do not disturb' sign on the door each day when we left. This was also a joke, but became an ongoing amusement for us, because every day when we returned, they had gone into the room, straightened up, and removed the 'do not disturb' sign. Like, seriously, what's the point of having it? I didn't really mind, and we weren't charged for room cleanings, but it was still funny.

All in all, I think I would still stay here again. Even with all the quirks, the price is right. Besides, there is no way to describe rolling over in the middle of the night and looking up to see the Duomo in the moonlight.

To the owners, if you're reading this, I understand that you are trying to keep your expenses low. However, if you spent some money to bring in better quality furnishings, staffed the front desk full time, and simply had someone each morning go to a nearby café and pick up some fresh pastries and brew some coffee, you could charge a lot more and make up the cost. You have one of the best locations in the world, but you are hurting yourself by cutting corners on the small things.

Great Place, Better Location!

This is a great B&B in the heart of Florence. The place is impeccable, spacious rooms, bathroom and common areas. The location could not be better, just walking distance of major attractions. I was on a bike tour and the only little problem was that the room was on a 3rd level floor and a little effort to take my bike to the room, but it was not a real problem.

Unmatched location, great price, good service

Definitely one for someone with "an historian's eye", tastefully decorated, unobtrusive staff and a fantastic location definitely mean I will be looking to stay here again should I ever return to Florence.

Location, location

Second time staying at Soggiorno Antica Torre. Location cannot be beat. We stayed in the Gold Room. It is incredibly large and immaculately clean. I feel the accommodations are starting to show their agely. For instance, a supporting board on the sofa was broken and you couldn't sit on that end without sinking down. Also, the bathroom is huge but the shower is tiny, a bit run down, and flimsy.

Great rooms right in the action of Piazza Della Signoria

Great find in the hub of Florence. You can't get any more central in old section of Florence. The entrance is hidden away between two restaurant's outdoor seating areas right in the middle of Piazza Della Signoria. The rooms are big and well appointed, Run by the owners who are there from 7am to 1pm. We enjoyed talking to the Grandfather who was born in the back room. Breakfasts are bit thin, but just walk out the front door and there are a lot options. The only word of caution is there are stairs to get up to the rooms or even the elevator, so if you don't want to walk up a few stair, not the place for you. We'll be back.
