Good hotel, although not a 5 star hotel

The hotel was good, staff was friendly, well located. Although it is a new hotel, it already shows some deterioration on the furniture and some lights in the room did not work. Basic courtesy features like coffee and water in the room are charged for, in most hotels I've stayed these things are complimentary. Excellent breakfast buffet, from local goods to international items. The rooms are a bit small. Free parking for guests is another good point. I would definitely go back if the coffee and water in the room are complimentary. The pool is really tiny, two rude kids were playing in it and was almost impossible for other guests not getting soaked.

I will definitely stay again at the Sonesta. Location is excellent. Short cab ride to the Buenavista mall. Walking distance (one block) to a catholic church. Cabs always available. The staff will help you making fare arrangements with cab drivers. Cabs do not use a meter, so fares are somehow open to negotiations.
Hotel facilities are in a good condition. The pool is good for an evening cool down but it is not a lap pool. Good enough for an evening cool down. I enjoyed the sauna. The gym is small but it is well equipped. All machines were in working conditions. The pool, gym, sauna are unattended. However, there is a desk with an internal phone which can be used to call room service if you want to order food or drinks.
Breakfast was excellent and it was included. Breakfast consisted of fruits, assortment of breads, cold cuts, local bakery items such as bunuelos, arepas, pan de yuca. They also had local dishes such as caldo de costilla (rib soup), calentao (rice with beans and pork meat), butiffarras. Fruit juices and the standard waffles and cereals.
At the lobby level there were fast food places which included a subway,couple of local hamburger business and a Domino's pizza. One big plus was an ATM machine which removed the stress of having to get cash in public places.
Room was nice, clean, AC and internet in working condition, nice view, hot water in shower worked.I did not took advantage of the mini bar. As in any hotel, items are overpriced. However, across street there was a convenient store where I was able to buy miscellaneous items: soda, beer, snacks, etc.
There is a nice bar with TV screens at the lobby level. Good place to meet friends.
I have no issues during checkout. I was aware that I had to pay taxes as I booked the hotel from a web site in the US. Taxes were about $25.00 no big deal but keep that in mind.
Fare from the hotel to the airport runs between 25000 to 30000 Colombian pesos which is equivalent to US 8-10. This is considered a long fare. You standard taxi ride should be between 6000-9000 or US 2-3.
Hotel staff was friendly and accommodating.
In summary, hotel is a great value. I highly recommend if you need to visit Barranquilla for business or pleasure.

Best breakfast buffet in the city (probably)

My girlfriend and I only stayed at this hotel for one night but could easily have stayed longer. The hotel is located quite far from the city center but a bit outside the northern part of the city (6000 COP to the Buena Vista mall).

You are welcomed by nice hotel staff who makes the check-in easy. The lobby is, however, shared with the leftovers of a mall which mostly contain fastfood places but one ATM.

The rooms are big with a comfortable bed. However, the painting could use a refreshing as well as some of the installations might need to be changed within a near future. The shower is modern and with hot water (you just need to let it run for a while).

The best part of the hotel is, as indicated by the title, the breakfast buffet. It has a great variety with fresh juice, bread, yogurt, cereals, pastries and you can even make your own waffle! The only thing missing for completing this could be hot chocolate.

Sonesta is definitely a hotel both my girlfriend and I can recommend and a place we would definitely return to.

One of the best hotels in town, Excellent buffet breakfast, parking and the rooms are ideal for a perfect break, comfy king size bed and the pool area is nice too. Recommeded 100%.

Visiting friends in Barranquilla, Colombia

We were on the edge of Barranquilla with a short taxi ride to the large mall of Barranquilla. The Sonesta hotel was a friendly place with modern amenities. The room was spacious and the shower big enough for a party! Hotel staff were very friendly, although not many could speak fluent enough English to have a conversation. Luckily there were maybe three hotel employees that were fluent, and of course our family that we visited were very helpful when we needed. The breakfast bar was the best one I've ever seen anywhere we have traveled, but the Colombian people like to eat three large meals a day, so there was plenty of food and choices. The Sonesta Hotel is connected on the first floor with several fast food restaurants and Domino's pizza. The pizza in Colombia is much better than American pizza with a different mix of toppings. This hotel came with our package travel deal and was worth the stay. Very cheap when in the combination with the air fare.
