Let down by some basics

Andrew Hon 18/06/2017 21:16

We stayed for 2 nights as a base for visiting Vesteralen. Reception staff were friendly and helpful, restaurant staff were not. Hotel is clean and modern throughout. We had a standard room which is very small indeed and has only very basic furnishings. Very little space to get round the bed and no room for a bedside cabinet on one side. No tea and coffee in the room, little hanging space and no drawers. Curtains barely cover the windows and don't keep the light out during 24 hour daylight. Bathroom was very nice modern style but absolutely miniscule - you have one foot in the shower whilst on the loo and both feet in it when at the wash basin. There is no room for anyone else in the bathroom when the shower is being used but it is a very nice, powerful hot shower. Breakfast is basic but ok. Evening meal has very limited options (4 mains and 2 desserts - and one of those was sold out) and the same menu every day. Prices are very expensive. The library area with (unmanned) bar is pleasant but is all dining style tables and chairs - some easy chairs would have been nice rather than these being in the main reception area. Tea and coffee is freely available beside reception but you need to fill the kettle from behind the bar to make your own drink. A major building and extension project was underway during our visit which created some early morning noise.

Comfortable accomodation

The Sortland hotel is an older hotel however the rooms have been renovated and have everything you need. The rooms are a reasonable size and the beds are comfortable. The breakfast and meals were all good and there is a comfortable library/ bar area for relaxation. The hotel also has access to a local fitness centre which is very good. The view in the photo is from out the front of the hotel.

Average hotel

The staff at this hotel let it down.
Basic youth hostel type accommodation.
Had to leave early for Andenes one morning, and staff wouldn't even let us in for breakfast 15 minutes early so we could grab a bowl of cereal, despite being told the night before we could.
Evening meal in the restaurant was good but service poor as only one lone lady on duty who did her best but one staff member for the whole restaurant!!!

Just about everything you would want in a small town hotel

Good location with easy access from and to the airport; airport shuttle actually stops at the hotel. A clean room ,nice lobby and real fantastic restaurant with a view towards the road where you can enjoy your meal while watching events unfold on the street. I really enjoyed the assortment of newspapers in the lobby

A pleasant third visit

Last week I stayed for 3 nights at the Sortland Hotel in Northern Norway. This is not a new hotel, but it has stood the test of time well. Very friendly and helpful staff in reception and restaurant. I particularly enjoyed the small enclave off the lobby, with its comfy seats near the gratis coffee and newspapers. In the lobby itself there is a humangous widescreen TV. My room faced the street, so there was some traffic noise, but this abated around midnight. Bed was super comfortable, and the room was well laid out. Breakfast buffet was not the best I've had, but more than adequate. Menu for dinner in the restaurant was very limited in scope. Prices were very, very high. But the food was quite good, and the servings more than generous. I enjoy staying here. It feels like home.
