What People are saying

Loved this hotel but could not sleep

on 02/07/2017 07:11

I'm having a hard time writing a negative review because the staff is so wonderful and I absolutely loved this hotel and the suite we only ended up staying in 1 night. We booked this hotel almost a year in advance because the wonderful reviews and pictures on trip advisor.
We were more excited to stay here then anywhere else we stayed in Peru because of the charm and historic look of the hotel. We checked in and went out to dinner and went and had some drinks. We came back to the hotel around 11 to find drunk kids from the neighboring discos sitting on the hotel steps not wanting to move to let us ring the bell so the hotel staff could open the door for us. This is when it all went south. I am an extremely deep sleeper and I sleep with the tv on at home. The bass from the clubs was shaking our room. I turned the tv almost all the way up and used earplugs that the hotel staff brought up to us and still the only thing we could hear was the deep bass. The hotel staff was great and did everything in there power to make us happy. We did not get more then 1 hours sleep. The next morning they moved us to one of their sister hotel's Tierra viva Cusco San blas and we had the best experience there. I would give this hotel 5 stars if it wasn't for the DISCOS!! Hopefully the city can do something to stop the discos playing music till 5am. I would love to come back and stay here if the disco's were shut down because the hotel really is a wonderful hotel.

Location not important if you can't sleep

Overseasfamily123on 27/06/2017 04:54

We stayed in the hotel in June and it defiantly has a good location only a short walk from the central plaza. The hotel has interesting rooms and helpful staff BUT next door are 3-4 discos and they run until 5am in the morning. The strong 'DOOF DOOF' of the base is a major issue. Most rooms in the hotel are so noisy that you can't get a good nights sleep, some you can hear the windows vibrate. There are some rooms on the 1st floor and one on the 2nd floor that are ok but all the others are terrible. Watch out it is very bad. We stayed at 5 other Peru hotels this month including two other Tierra Viva ones, other hotels have better breakfasts (Cusco Plaza does not cook you eggs as others do) and had lifts (Cusco Plaza has 4 levels and no lift, reception is on floor 4 and breakfast on floor 1, be prepared for a lot of stairs). The other issue you have to overcome if you stay here is that most rooms can feel a lot like cells with no external windows.
I would not stay here again.

Tierra Viva is Fantastic

Tierra Viva is a half block from the Plaza de Armas. It is a new hotel. The rooms are very nice. The rooms are very affordable. The staff is great. They help coordinate day trips to visit Incan ruins near Cuzco. They let us leave our bags when we stayed at Machu Picchu. Tierra Viva has a nice breakfast too. I definitely recommend it.

They just go above and beyond!

We stayed here for 3 nights before starting the inca trail hike. I was so impressed by the staff and how nice they were! I come from a place that is an altitude of about 19 and other wise live under the sea level. I struggled with getting acclimated to being so high, but they were very helpful and very nurturing to my needs! This one concierge whose name I unfortunately don't remember didn't speak a lot of English but tried his best to get us where we needed to go and recommended some really awesome locally owned restaurants to us! He was my favorite! And whether we needed help carrying bags and storing them for our whole hike or exchanging money at midnight because we forgot to earlier in the day, they were very helpful! Loved our stay here!

Front desk service second to none but sadly lacking in one or two areas

mpg08_12on 09/06/2017 22:13

We stayed at this hotel either side of a trip to Machu Picchu, leaving our luggage at this hotel whilst we took a backpack and stayed at their Tierra Viva in Machu Picchu. I wish I could give this place 5 stars, purely due to the quality of the service at the front desk. The gentleman, who appears to be the manager seems to work day and night to make sure everyone has a great stay.

The hotel is in a great location for the day time, its a 30 second walk from the main plaza (if that) with access to the main tourist areas to see and great places to eat at. I say for the day time as the street the hotel is located on seems to have a big club scene vibe at night. Weekday or weekend there are a large number of young locals with loud music out in the evening which, if you're a light sleeper, could trouble you. There appeared to be a room or two within the hotel that didn't have a wall to the outdoors which would limit the noise but then lacks any fresh air if needed. I'm a pretty heavy sleeper so it didn't bother me the slightest.

Good breakfast, which seemed limited in variety to some, but I think is actually plenty for a morning meal. There are 3 hot dishes (always including scrambled eggs) alongside cold meat(s) and cheese, cereals, fruit and some cake. What they do serve is of good quality.

There is a nice shared balcony with a view over Cusco and a fireplace indoors to relax at in the evenings. The hotel provides free coca tea which is meant to help acclimatise, although it wasn't really to my taste.

Sadly the cleaning of the room on a daily basis was below par. Used glasses were left out uncleaned, bottles left by the bin (as it was full) were not removed and the towels were every day without fail taken but not replaced.

Whilst the front desk service is second to none to almost any hotel I have stayed at (ever!) the noisy evenings and sub par cleaning capabilities meant it didn't fully live up to the perfect stay.
