What People are saying

Nice Location, Run-down Rental

TriciaGraceon 20/03/2017 21:00

Our stay at a Forest Park town home was disappointing. The finishes are very basic – low-end cabinets, formica counter tops, plastic dishes, etc. The carpet was worn and dirty. The toaster only toasted on one side and one of the blow dryers didn’t work. The hot water ran out after three of our group showered. There is no daily housekeeping so no refresh of towels and you remove your own trash. The beds were comfortable, there was enough seating and there was wood for a fire which was nice. At about $900 a night, the unit was over-priced. Sorry I can’t recommend.

Ski Trip

We booked a 2 bedroom townhouse at the Mt. Washington Place. The townhouse was wonderful. Spacious living room with a gas fireplace. Large dining table in the dining area and an updated kitchen.

We would rate this place a 5 but when we checked in, we were told the dishwasher was broken which wouldn't have been a big deal. What we weren't told was that the dishwasher was left with a full load of dirty dishes from the prior tenants. This was disgusting. Grade 0 for the housekeeping staff who would leave such a mess for the new tenants and not handwash the dishes and put them in a dish strainer. Definitely not what one would expect from a supposed 5 star resort.

We handwashed all of the dishes we used, but left the dirty dishes from the prior tenants right in the dishwasher that didn't work and reported this at checkout. Garbage disposal did not work and kitchen sink was slow to drain. Otherwise, the place was great and so was the skiing. Would probably stay at the Mt. Washington Hotel next time around.

Roll the dice.

The Townhomes is a collection of several different communities. Some are the bright, large-window sunny woody lodges you see in the marketing photos, others are single level, few windows, lower ceiling older condos. While the site will point out those that are slope-side and ski-in, ski-out, be aware that others are across the street, not within walking distance, requiring a ride on the complimentary shuttle. Upon check-in, I witnessed the two people ahead of me both fire off comments of disappointment at being handed their keys and map of the property to find that they were across the street from the main resort. The manager must deal with this all of them time as he gave them each $ off per night. He also took a call from someone who seemed to have the same complaint. Ok. I get that it is not a guarantee when you make a reservation with this resort that you will be ski-in, ski-out, or even mountain/slopeside for that matter, however, it seems an unfair consumer business practice to charge the same amount for any and all Townhomes/Condos and then rely on luck of the draw to see where you end up at check in. Every other mountain that I have been to - you get what you pay for and nobody is disappointed. The resort should have 2 categories of rentals: Slope side (possibly ski-in/ski-out) and across the street. There is a huge variance in the rental properties and décor since they are individually owned. Can't help that. But what you can help is setting expectations and truth in advertising. It is a HUGE let down to spend thousands per week and when you get there, you are sent to older condos across the highway. This is especially true when you are travelling with small children. Ironically, we were put in a condo across the street that was in the same exact building where we rented last year directly from an owner. The difference? This year we paid over $400 more per night. For what? We booked over 6 months in advance and how can the resort straight-faced tell their customers that they do not know where your Townhome/Condo will be located until check in? You know what the supply is vs demand. It's a very small possibility when you reserve that you will actually be one of the lucky few to be mountainside. Total crap shoot. The only sure way to get a certain unit is to book with an owner. You'll save yourself a lot of $$$. The resort knows this too, and as a result, if you do rent directly from an owner, you may not be able to use the pool/gym at the Omni as a penalty. The game room and shuttle will still be available. The savings and convenience may be worth more than a dip in the pool anyway.

Not sure I'd go back...

My friends and I decided to book a condo at Forest Cottages rather than rooms at the Mt. Washington Hotel in order to save a little money and so we could each have our own rooms. We were told it was ski in/ski out but we never saw a slope. We weren't there to ski but we never saw a slope nearby. Either way, the thing to keep in mind is that a condo offers fireplace etc. but our toilet overflowed (at 1:30 am) and we had to call maintenance which got us to bed around 3 am...making the next day tiring. The fire and seating area was nice but small and the kitchen even smaller. Bedrooms were decent but everything needed updating. A few chipped dishes, limited cabinet space and minimal kitchen supplies. Two bedrooms were in basement and they were small and chilly. Despite having thermostat to 80 our heat was at 62 so we were cold much of the time. The Mount Washington Hotel is VERY pricey for food and spa. We did not feel we got good value for our money in this area and would lean towards Loon Mtn next time. There is more to do in that area and restaurants and spa are priced better.

We had booked a 4 bedroom 3.5 bath condo at Mt. Washington Place - spacious, large basement area w/ ping pong table etc. Upon arrival we were told we had an "up-grade" to 5 bedroom. This unit was tighter, small kitchen and living room/dining room area with awkward bathroom set-up. It worked but the original would have been the preference.
