What People are saying

Pleasant Nights stay, but could be better.

MMeikleon 23/04/2017 22:20

We stopped here the night, whilst visiting local family.

Firstly I have to say the staff were extremely friendly, helpful and accommodating. The room was spacious and the bed very comfortable. The bar / restaurant area was clean and inviting as perhaps you would expect in an old style pub.

However this has the potential to change very quickly. You could smell and see the damp in our room and bathroom, Not excessive yet, but a little more neglect and this could become unpleasant. The kettle in our room was faulty, missing its on / off switch. Yes you could switch it on but with difficulty. Kettles do not cost much!

Our food was quite edible, my wife had fish which she enjoyed and I had a steak, which was not medium rare as I had asked and frankly quite tasteless. Apart from the chips, not a vegetable in sight. For what we got, the food was expensive. The main menu was Indian with only a few other limited choices. The restaurant only had a few customers on a Saturday night, which if I were the owner would be worried about.

With the enthusiasm of the staff I hope this hotel will in the future will be able to do better.

Anniversary meal

This was a meal for just the two of us. The pub/hotel is out in the countryside so the location and general look of the building was very nice. I was surprised how few people were in the pub having a meal, so that always concerns me. However, the meal came within a reasonable time and the food was very good with the exception of the broccoli that was insufficiently cooked. This is not an uncommon experience though, in restaurants who seem to think nearly raw veg is what people want. Wake up, it isn't.
The food was too pricey though. For what we had for £45.00, I feel could and should have been nearer £35.00 to be comparable with other places I have been.

Comfortable hotel and good quality restaurant

I visited as part of a weekend away, walking around the Chilterns. My room was large and very clean, with a bath (rare luxury in hotels) and a good supply of tea and coffee. The wifi is really fast and easy to connect to as well.

We ate in the restaurant and the food was the highest quality. I would especially recommend the curries!

Finally, the staff are lovely and very accommodating.

Poor service

I went here with work for our Christmas meal.
When we arrived the place was empty which I found a little disconcerting on a Friday night just before Christmas.
There where 8 of us and we had booked, so they knew we were coming.
The menu I found limited, not like the last time I went and staff although friendly seemed not bothered again not like last time.
1st of all one of our starters was totally forgotten which we did get eventually then 2 of the mains arrived a long time after the rest and the nan breads for 2 of the party arrived as they finished and in one basket(good job they where friends)
So in all we didn't eat together, which was a shame as the food wasn't bad.
The problem was apparently that there was only one chef.
Well if he can't cope with 8 people that he knew was coming and an empty pub then i would suggest he's in the wrong business.
All this was relayed to us in a very couldn't give a stuff way.
All in all I don't think I'll go back which is a shame because it's a nice looking pub and and the food was quite nice once it arrived.

Looks nice from the outside

People say 'You get what you pay for' but this isn't particularly cheap for an out of town pub.
Rooms are outdated but big, but carpets and furniture has all seen better days, all looks a bit old and worn out. Bathroom not particularly clean either. All PAT electrical testing out of date with damaged sockets evident. Windows not too good either and this place is adjacent to the M40 so I didin't get a lot of sleep due to traffic noise. Maybe some rooms on the other side are better?
restaurant is primarily Indian but I do love steak, however this came up medium rather than medium rare as requested. The 'griddled' tomato was absolutely raw as well, as it was with the breakfast. Also rather bizarre choice of music in the restaurant as the decor suggests they are trying to be a little 'chique' and up market but I think they had 'Now thats what I call Music' Album playing raunchy POP songs - totally inappropriate.
This place is obviously doing everything as cheap as they can and it shows. The breakfast was pretty tasteless and they use 'value' sausages which I think were 90% rusk, 1 rasher of bacon and cold beans.
The WiFi is also terrible.
