What People are saying

Great historical park!

Dawn Hon 31/08/2017 00:28

Be sure to come early in the day to enjoy the historic movie, ranger introductory talk, cooking demo, canon firing, as well as the touring the grounds and exhibits. Also enjoy sitting by the water watching the boats and drinking in the gentle cool breeze---perfect on a hot summer day!

So cool

I loved it. The visitors center, the park and fort are all fantastic. I highly recommend watching the short film inside the visitors center before you enter the fort. Nothing quite like hearing the star spangled banner while actually viewing the star spangled banner (flag) flying in it's very spot the song was conceived.

History

Great place to visit and to learn about history. Awesome short film and very well done playing the national Anthem while screen goes up to see the real flag thru window. Very emotional and made me proud to be an American.

Oh Say Can You See

My wife, two children and I visited Fort McHenry in August 2017. Our first stop was the visitor center. You can watch a short movie on Francis Scott Key and the Star Spangled Banner. At the end of the movie the curtain goes up and you look out the window to see the original flag standing in the distance. Don't forget to stand up. The visitor center has exhibits on the history of the War of 1812 and the Star Spangled Banner. There is a gift shop. After visiting the visitor center, we walked around Fort McHenry. You can look out into Baltimore Harbor and then visit Fort McHenry and see all the cannons, the flag and the barracks. This important historical place has been well preserved and is a must see in a visit to Baltimore. We drove there but you can also take a water taxi from the Inner Harbor.

Oh Say, We Did See...

Every year for my husband's birthday, we visit a different battlefield or historical site that has some military history significance. This year, he elected to visit Fort McHenry, a site I have lived near my entire life, but never visited. What an awesome experience! We arrived prior to the gates opening at 9am and were one of the first cars in. The parking is convenient, free, and immediately in front of the visitor's center. The visitor's center was nicely designed with a brief movie and small museum with interactive features that will interest children and adults alike. We took our National Park Passport Book and stamped it and enjoyed the small gift shop as well. From the visitor's center, there is a paved path leading up to the Fort. There are great views of both the Fort and the harbor from the park surrounding the Fort. The park is free and is an popular place for joggers and families to explore. If you want to go into the fort, the price was $10 per person and they give you a sticker to wear. If you have never been, I would highly recommend going into the fort and getting there in time for the flag raising. The Park Rangers encourage visitor participation in raising the flag. It is a pretty awesome experience to be park of American history in that way. We did not bring a picnic lunch, but you could and it would be very nice. The Fort is about a mile's walk from some good local restaurants. If you plan to do an Inner Harbor Cruise, you can also catch it from the dock there. It was a really amazing experience. Shortly after our visit, we were at a ball game and hearing our National Anthem had an entirely new meaning to me. Thanks to this visit, I am able to appreciate it even more!
