What People are saying

Neglected and down at heel

Jane Won 20/11/2017 22:28

Needs a good shake up. Pool is nice and location. But rooms, although large, need decoration: shower didn’t work, there is damp on the walls. Not having complimentary water each day is mean. Food is poor and over cooked buffet and the wine is from a box. These are small economies that are totally unnecessary. The staff couldn’t be bothered. Hotel needs a good manager and an injection of enthusiasm. Such a pity.

Birthday

Went for two nights with my wife and son to celebrate two birthdays in our group of 9 ppl.. we took the all inclusive package which I think was very reasonable. The food was average with a good little variety everyday. The drinks were very good. Pool never dirty and the beach was nice and calm. Rooms are a bit dated but no complaints. The resort is good for families .. Will recommend and will return.

Face the Music

We went to the Turtle Beach some time ago and enjoyed our holiday. This time it was completely different.

The food, with very few exceptions, is very poor. I had bad stomach problems twice and my wife had these problems throughout her stay. The hot food is quite often served warm and there are no hot plates.

All-inclusive drinks were provided in small plastic cups half filled with ice, some mixer and very little alcohol. We did manage to get good drinks and cocktails in a proper glass but you have to specify what you want.

Service, very poor. Reception pass on messages and get upset when you complain nothing is done. The bar service is a disaster. The bar is supposed to open at 10.00 a.m. but you will be lucky to get a drink at 10.30 a.m.

Hygiene, if you like birds all over your cutlery and crockery before you dine this is the place to be. The bar staff after removing rubbish do not wash their hands before providing you with a drink. If you return a dirty glass they will put your next drink in it. Our room was not cleaned properly during our stay with dirty floors under the beds and dirty toilet.

Music, very loud music from the one bar when it is open. This means you can forget about having a quiet drink, lunch or dinner or a quiet swim in the pool. After we complained about the loud music to management who did nothing Geoffrey the barman took it personally, made the music louder and was generally rude to us so getting a drink from the bar was extremely unpleasant when he was on duty. The noise was excessive and continuous from the bar opening time. This was the first time we have had such treatment from a barman and nothing was done by management to stop it.

Website, the hotel website shows two restaurants and bars. In practice only one restaurant is open and only one bar. The Crusoe Bar has not been open for the past six months so you have to suffer the noise at the pool (‘Surf’) bar. We never found the coffee shop but there is free tea and coffee available throughout the day. There is a water sports centre which opened once during our two weeks stay. There is no games room and no table tennis.

The beach is pleasant and unpopulated. The sea was rough and murky throughout our stay making snorkelling impossible. We visited other parts of the island and the sea was clear turquoise water with fish swimming around as you would expect in the Caribbean.

The hotel has a dress code which is ignored by guests.

The hotel is non-smoking which is also ignored by guests.

The hotel still has some charm with a good pool and grounds.

Rest and Relaxation

The resort was really nice, a little outdated though. The beach area needs to be cleaned up, maybe raked on a daily basis. The dining area was beachfront, a nice relaxing scenery. However; the birds were out of control! You could barely eat in peace, they would perch on your chair or table. You can’t leave your food unattended at all, the birds would attack your plate. The staff was very nice at all times. The food was also very good :-) so happy about that. We didn’t do the all inclusive, we only did the breakfast package. We thought we might be able to get local food near by. Bad bad bad decision, there were “no” stores at all near by. We had to pay a taxi to take us to look for dinner each night. That can be costly! The rooms need updating, and a good cleaning. There were cobwebs in my room, beside my bed and above my bed. I did not leave a tip for house keeping, I felt they did the bare minimum. They would take our towels, and replenish with less! They hardly left us tea or coffee for our room. They never gave us any more shampoo or conditioner for the 8 days we were there. Unfortunately, my aunt was not too pleased with her stay. On the other hand, I had a great time except for the distance to get to a store.

Tobago not quite what we expected

Chalkie49on 03/11/2017 18:03

Stayed at Turtle Beach for 16 nights at the end of rainy season - had around a cumulative 6 days or so raining, 5 overcast, 5 sunny with what taxi man said was worst weather in 15 years. In our view you can see everything worth seeing in 2 days on Tobago and it just seems that authorities are not up to speed with promoting tourism from the UK and Europe. As I think it is a 3* we had no great expectations of The Rex hotel which was as usual in a prime spot. Sadly little was being done to clean up the beach to encourage customers to use it. The cheerful Pool guy worked hard on keeping it clean Monday to Friday but normally did not finish till about 10am. Because of the lack in numbers we always had a choice of all 20 or so sunbeds around the lovely pool - and no one reserved any. There was not one time when I can remember all the sunbeds being in use. It was obviously before high season as customers fluctuated between perhaps 20 and 60, depending on how many were across on short stays from Trinidad. 10 or less from the UK. Consequently it seemed that the Hotel was working on minimum staff with just one restaurant open for all meals, the shop never open, one bar open, Watersports centre was closed for the whole time. Although the food was cooked well there was an extremely limited choice and very very repetitive - Chicken, Fish, and another meat dish, Potato Wedges. Rice and Mixed Vegetables (often Broccolli Cauliflower and Carrotts). Surprising number of Roast Dinners in the evenings and seemed like mostly Lamb. Salad was disappointing, normally Lettuce,Tomato and one other option. BBQ Monday Wednesday Friday lunch became boring with Burger Chicken Fish Hotdog. All meals were Buffet and no mention of A la Carte which would possibly be a better dinner option with so few guests to make it a better experience rather than a rushed half hour, and would potentially cut down on waste. Entertainment may have been on perhaps 8 evenings during our stay but there were only a handful of guests watching on a couple of occasions and less on others as most guests seemed to return to rooms straight after dinner, possibly due to there being no mention of any evening entertainment or any poster being placed in the lobby apart from the one for the Manager's Cocktail Party. On one occasion we left before the Steel Pan man set up as we were seated alone near the only bar and did not want the embarrassment of leaving during his show. Rooms were more than adequate although a little tired - made up and serviced nicely each day with no problems with towels etc. It did seem that maybe the floors needed washing more regularly as the bottom of the net curtains were filthy. On the Plus side all the staff throughout our stay were very pleasant and helpful from the outset when Abby sourced a room with a bath tub for us. We still enjoyed a chill out holiday.
