Dreadful value noisy hotel

Van Heeckeren hotel Ameland : review :

I was very disappointed with our stay at this hotel because of the noise and disturbances we had on three out of our four nights stay here .
The first night, Friday there was a street festival literally outside the hotel and the noise from hotel residents outside and underneath our room went on all night until at 5am when my partner and our neighbours begged the party makers to stop.

I know a street festival is noisy but when I booked the hotel no one advised me there would be a festival. Nor did any of the hotel staff stop or apologise for the noise from the other guests. The worst noise was from guests returning to their rooms and sitting outside their room on their patios drinking and shouting .

The next night , Saturday the hotel guests in the room below ours were again drinking and shouting and smoking right under our bedroom window from midnight onwards . We tried to keep all the windows closed even though it was very hot and airless. The small fan provided in the room was too noisy to leave on and there is no air conditioning so we were awake again most of the night. It was quite unbearable. At one point the guests in the room below ours were clearly drunk and when a neighbour asked them to stop they ran up and down shouting and banging on windows whilst using a mobile phone to share the experience with friends via FaceTime.

On Sunday I complained to the hotel reception desk and asked for a quiet room . She spoke to the manager who was off site and she said that the manager asked to find out if if was the noise or the room we didn't like. I said it was the noise. The manager told her to tell me that the noisy guests were checking out so it would be quiet. On Sunday night it was quiet.

But on Monday night AGAIN there were people in the room(s) below us sitting on the patio under our windows smoking and drinking and laughing and chatting and singing until the early hours of the morning .
We almost thought to go to sleep in the car.

I asked to see the manager again on our last day but again I was told he was not there. The receptionist agreed that it had been a difficult four days and she told me that the noisy guests had been fined and barred.

This was no comfort to me as 3/4 of my holiday in Ameland was ruined through lack of sleep.

We booked this holiday in Ameland as we wanted a QUIET holiday . We live in London so we understand noise but we wanted a quiet holiday. Nobody advised me of the festival and no one apologized or moved our room.

I paid the bill but I asked the hotel to reimburse me some of the cost by way of compensation .

The hotel manager refused saying that he would offer a free night in future which is not helpful as I don't intend to return to Ameland for another holiday in the near future . He told me I should have called reception in the night if I was being disturbed but there was no phone in the room and I wasn't coming down to reception in my nightdress !

He was unwilling and unhelpful.

Two other disappointments - the hotel beach club house is great - but is actually 11km away ! It doesn't tell you that on the details on booking.com !
There is no bar or restaurant in the hotel - just a vending machine . I couldn't believe it .
I paid nearly £1000 for two people for our 4 night stay and would advise others to find a better hotel than this for their money .

Me wife and I spent 2 nights here on a midweek visit to the island of Ameland. the staff were very friendly and helpful. the room was clean and comfortable although on the small side. breakfast was from an ample set out buffet. some of the tables were too close to each other which gave some problems with getting in and out of your seat. one thing however did frustrate me was that my tablet would not work on their wi-fi, when I asked why I was told they were having troubles with android based devices for a number of months. I spent over an hour trying to find out why I could not connect. I told them to put this on their site as I need not have brought my tablet with me. apart from this it was an average hotel with friendly staff.

Great hotel, superb location

We both loved the island and wished we'd gone there way earlier. Once you set foot on the ferry, that holiday feeling sinks in and we had a blast throughout our long weekend away. The hotel had our rental bikes ready at the port, and our suitcases were transported to the hotel by the bike rental company. It was a mere 10-minute bike ride from the port to the hotel so pretty easy.
The hotel itself is very nicely designed and has a great location in the town of Nes. We had the best room in the house and slept very well, even though the hotel was fully booked and had a wedding going on that weekend. Enjoying breakfast outside on the patio was a nice add-on, as the weather happened to be gorgeous that weekend.
Overall a great, great find. Will definitely return.

Very nice hotel but very thin walls!!

I really enjoyed overall the stay there but I had two big issues with the room:
1. the walls were awful thin, I could almost hear our neighbours breathe. And since we were in a romantic suite this was the last thing we wanted.
2. the bathroom was not very good ventilated and smelled awful! We tried to keep it open and ventilate but it was unbearable.

Apart from that the breakfast was very nice, comfortable bed, very clean rooms and nice personnel.

We had booked ourselves a suite, it had a whirlpool in the room. the next time I would definitely book the wellness suite. the only remark for the hotel; fix the smell in the shower cabins.

they win extra points on the breakfast. there is so much to choose and delicious cookies to take with your coffee to go! definitely want to visit again!
