A beautiful jewel palace
ViaeWarrioron 23/07/2017 16:25This was a family favorite for many reasons. The facility is gorgeous, the rooms very large and well appointed. The food was excellent all around, breakfast, lunch, and dinner. They accommodated our needs, veg, spice level, no dairy.
Our waiter "Shiva" was amazing, amazing, amazing. He is an encyclopedia of knowledge. He entertained us with stories and jokes, He even arranged an early morning bike tour to see wild peacocks. We saw dozens.
This is a stop in southern India not to be missed!!
Place fit for the Royals
Vijay Aon 30/06/2017 16:18We were 4 families travelling together with kids from Chennai and decided to stay at the Visalam. Much to our surprise, our stay there exceeded our expectations. Having said that, CGH Earth sets a very high standard and the staff at Visalam lived upto it.
The property itself retained an old world charm & Chettinad style architecture, am sure CGH Earth took a lot of effort restoring the property for us to get a feel of authentic Chettinadu lifestyle.
The food served was sumptuous, vegetables were freshly cut from their own garden and healthy. We left the selection of the menu to Febin, Ramu & Shiva with some riders and they came up with a menu which was different and enjoyable on all 3 days that we were there. The Sunday Lunch "Feast" was out of the world. What we liked best was that we had to inform the staff in advance if we were going to have lunch / dinner there. They would then prepare food for that many number and ensure zero wastage of food.
The rooms were huge, on an average about 500 square feet, with some being larger. Well appointed furniture in the rooms, and extremely comfortable beds.
The Visalam is walking distance to the Kanadukathan Palace which we can only appreciate from the outside. It is about 20 minutes drive to Pillayarpatti temple and 15 minutes drive to Athangudi Tile Manufacturing village. It is 10 minutes to Thirumayam Fort and 25 minutes to Karaikudi.
The Chettinadu region offers a very rustic lifestyle and we experienced it first hand last weekend, truly relaxing and rejuvenating. Stay at The Visalam, experience The Chettinadu way of life.
Special thanks to Febin, Ramu, Shiva & the rest of the staff for taking very good care of us.
What a treasure!
RimaK42on 23/06/2017 05:31Here is one of the few heritage properties you can actually live in! It is in Art Deco style with typical Chettinad home features. The rooms are huge, comfortable and it was meaningful that to preserve the at,sop here, there was no TV in rooms but available in the lobby. The food is excellent. Chef Nadesh cooked up a dinner with starters of Latchakatta Keira kola ( with lettuce from their garden), coriander soup or lamb trotter soup, mil ahi kochi ( chicken prepared with fresh pepper)! Lad ul Nandu masala ( crab with hand pounded spices) and a variety of veg dishes topped with dessert of Honey cake. Manager Febin was an excellent host pandering to all our whims...organised. Bullock cart ride and Shiva an excellent local guide at the hotel. Thank you for a great experience guys. As for Chettinad, the number of houses in Kanadukathan, where Visalam is, is endless.
Lovely hotel in Chattinadu
PRK346on 04/06/2017 07:16We stayed here two nights in early May and loved not only the beautifully restored historical mansion, but also the location, the attentive staff and particularly the super clean pool, which did not use any chemicals, just RO purified water and UV filtration.
We also loved the free cooking class, the complementary walk around town, the special dinner setting near the pool for the "King and Queen" (as we were called that evening, since we were the only guests that night).
A lovely touch was the bed turn down in the evening, which included a stylized flower on the sheet made up of various real flower petals, see photo for details.
Our stay was an unforgettable experience, we simply loved every moment we were there.
Beautifully restored with thought and love.
dashintrueon 25/05/2017 09:16We were booked at the Visalam for 2 nights, and ended up extending our stay there by another night - because we just loved the place! The hospitality and care that the staff took to ensure we were comfortable in every way (we had many special food requests) - was most appreciated. The overall attention to detail in every corner of the space was also something that we enjoyed discovering. The property has been restored with much thought and love, and continues to be very well maintained. The staff and overall service was exceptional.
