What People are saying

Beautiful and Serene

Living in Luang Prabang, my Fiancee and I needed to get away but decided to try a resort close by. We were glad we did. Zen Namkhan is beautiful and peaceful. The service is welcoming, the food was nice and the natural pool is amazing.

One of the best things we did in Vietnam

To be honest we weren't quite sure what to expect and booked this as a last stop on a tour of Cambodia and Vietnam. This was our only stop in Laos picked due to its proximity to Elephant village. It's beautiful and we had a fabulous and relaxing time. The setting is breathtaking, food amazing and for 2 days we were the only guests. Elephant village was awesome. We had such a nice time we didn't bother going to Luang Prebang but we've decided to do another trip and explore Laos somehow so perhaps we will make it next time. Highly recommend.

Quiet and serene

A lovely relaxing resort. Small. Super friendly staff. Great food. Pool is picturesque but more of a pond than q pool. Handy for elephant sanctuary just along the river. Peaceful isolation . Recommended if you want quiet and picturesque.

Superb place to stay

Loved every minute of my time here, from the beautiful rooms to the gorgeous riverside location to the friendly and attentive staff, everything was perfect! The grounds are lush and green and everything is clean and well cared for. Good food too.

Beautiful and authentic resort, great staff and food!

We really enjoyed the peacefulness of the resort, combined with the helpful owners and staff. The lady owner is a previous chef, so even though the menu is not extremely lengthy, whatever comes out of the pots are truly delicious! I recommend the `Roasted lao seaweed´snack - a local delicacy, that comes with sesam seeds, spring onion and peanutbutter dip - yummy yummy! The prices are also very fair, so there is no need to spend time going in to town (the taxi is USD 20 per way).

For a stay I would recommend to book the superior or deluxe bungalows, as the interior decoration and the huge balcony with a river view is absolutely worth every penny. In the early mornings or evenings you can occasionally hear the distant village sounds, fishermen singing, elephants roaring in the jungle and the elephant keepers playing on their flutes. These bungalows are a bit expensive, but give the full experience of staying in this wonderful natural setting. We were really happy to upgrade after a nights stay at the standard bungalow.

For entertainment you can either walk (approx. 20 minutes) or take the boat to the rescued elephants village. Entrance is USD 10, boat ride is USD 5 (one way, so you can return by boat, if you wish). The elephant village is a nice play to visit and support and you can have a short ride on one of the elephants, which are treated well. And they also arrange for 2-3 day safaris.

As mentioned, it is expensive to go in to town from the resort, so consider to do all the shopping, excursions etc. before or after visiting the resort. There could be a bit more information and leaflets in the reception and/or in the bungalows on possible excursions, things to see and do in the nearby area, so that you don´t need to inquire about it yourself.
Oh, and do try the Lao herbal sauna when the sun sets. It is not really hot, but steamy with a nice scent of herbs. Enjoy it with a cold Lao beer :-)

I´ve seen some people commenting that this resort is too expensive or overpriced. However, considering that Laos in general is more expensive than the neighboring countries, and the wonderful Lao wilderness experience you get at this place, I personally find it to be well worth the time and money spent. Be aware that the wi-fi only works in the restaurant and pool area - and that the place can not be recommended for disabled people not being able to cope with steps and and an uneven terrain. The resort has an ATV to help with your luggage though.
