About Shimla

Until the arrival of the British, Shimla was a tiny forest clearing called Shyamala (the local name for Kali). A Scottish civil servant by the name of Charles Kennedy set up a summer home in 1822 which started a rapid influx of travelers to this sleepy little town. By the 1870s, Shimla became the official summer getaway for the English and earned its tag as India’s best hill station. The construction of Kalka-Shimla railway line in 1903 further increased the influx of tourists to this charming hill station. The town serves as the capital of Himachal Pradesh and is famed for its stunning Victorian era building. Shimla even served as the capital of Punjab for a brief period before the map was redrawn in 1966.


Shimla is strung out on a 12 km ridge on the valley; this tiny hill station attracts millions of visitors every year.
