About Shimla

Until the arrival of the British, Shimla was a tiny forest clearing called Shyamala (the local name for Kali). A Scottish civil servant by the name of Charles Kennedy set up a summer home in 1822 which started a rapid influx of travelers to this sleepy little town. By the 1870s, Shimla became the official summer getaway for the English and earned its tag as India’s best hill station. The construction of Kalka-Shimla railway line in 1903 further increased the influx of tourists to this charming hill station.
