Nice Hotel In Chalon sur Saone

Overall I very much enjoyed my stay. The location is good, near the TGV station and a short walk to the center of town. Rooms are clean and comfortable and the staff is very friendly. Plus there is a very friendly dog who will come greet you every evening when you walk into the hotel.....he also loves to have breakfast with you! The breakfast served every morning is very good. On-site parking is available. Just be aware that there are several different room sizes, you may get one that is very spacious or one that is very small, I recommend that you specify the size room you want when you book. Also, there is no air conditioning in the rooms, which is only an issue on hot summer days, otherwise not a problem. Other thing to be aware of is that the desk is not staffed 24 hours, and check in time does not begin until 5 PM....a little inconvenient if you are traveling from the US and would like to get into your room upon arrival in Chalon. Overall, though, I really like this hotel and will stay there again.
Fine stay

This hotel is located just a short walk from the city centre. My room was on the ground floor with doors opening onto a small garden area. The room was fine and had everything I needed. I was travelling by bike and was able to store my bike in a shed in the front car park. As others have said, there is a 5pm check-in, which is late particularly for a city centre hotel, but it is made clear on booking and as long as you are aware, you can choose to stay here or not. Plenty of places to eat within a 15 minute walk, so I didn't eat at the hotel. Staff were very pleasant and WiFi was good.
Beware of the hidden charges

We recently booked a night for two people at this hotel through Hotels.com. You're not allowed to check in before 5pm, but we knew that already. We were able to leave the car in the car parking (there is a charge) and go into Chalon Sur Saone for the day, so the very late check in wasn't an issue. However when we did get to check in, they informed us that whilst we had booked a room for 2 people with breakfast, we could only have one free breakfast and had to pay for the second one. We queried this and they told us it was the type of room we booked. So we phoned Hotels.com who were as equally baffled as us but incredibly helpful. They called the hotel on our behalf but they were not going to budge on this, so we changed our booking to room only and went out for breakfast to one of the many cafes in town. Why anyone would book a room for two people and only expect one breakfast is beyond me, but I think part of a number of hidden charges the hotel has. In addition, this place advertises as a three star establishment - it really isn't. When you read a number of the previous reviews, particularly from the French customers, this is a common theme. I think they've tried to go shabby chic, but it's more shabby than chic. I would not stay here again.
Not user friendly

We had to stay overnight in this little town in order to join a river cruise the next day. I felt a cold coming on and couldn't wait to take a little nap. We arrived at the hotel at 1:30 and were shocked to see it locked up until 5 PM which was their check in time. So we had to kill 3 1/2 hrs. While the hotel is adequate and clean and the staff friendly and helpful, I wouldn't stay here again. Unless you're willing to wander around town for several hours before checking in,I would not recommend it.
Small hotel near the centre

Small, interesting hotel. Our room was comfortable, the bathroom was good, not luxurious but reflected in the price. Charming staff on reception, most helpful. Interesting artwork and decor. Parking was 7 euros if I remember rightly.
