Unexpectedly nice

This past June, our family stayed three nights at the Hotel Abamar, renting two rooms. The location is quiet, which at first made us think the hotel was a forgotten old place, but we ended up enjoying our stay. I would guess the hotel was built in the 60s and so it has a mid-century modern vibe, which we like, although some might find it dated. The rooms were fairly simple, but had clearly been remodeled recently and were very clean and up-to-date. Both rooms had gorgeous views of the ocean. The staff was very helpful, friendly, and professional, although the breakfast staff was a little less friendly. We enjoyed having a drink in the bar each evening and felt that the bartender, in particular, seemed very professional. The swimming pool and landscaping around it were especially nice. We didn't use the beach at all so I can't comment on that; the water was cold at the southern end of the island, which kept us from swimming. Our one complaint was that the only wifi reception was in the small area around the front desk. If we were to stay at that end of Sardinia on another trip, I would stay here again.
Abamar Hotel great place to stay

I loved this hotel. The front desk was very helpful. Beautiful lobby and lounge. They spoke English very well. The grounds were very nicely done. The room was very quiet. It was a room that had been recently renovated. Central Air. Large room, King siez bed. modern bathroom. Mini fridge. Deco in room was austere. No clock I had a very private terrace/balcony. Fabulous. However mine did overlook the roof of the restaurant. But with the trees and the sea in the distance it wasn't a major problem. The beach is narrow but very long. Very clean. Great beach beds. There is a supermarket and a pizzeria about a 500 meter walk . Very good breakfast, it is a cold breakfast but a lot of choice. There is a local bus up by the supermaket that takes you into Pula. Worth the trip. 1€ . Hotel very helpful and suggestions for day tours. I went on a sailing day that was great. 25 meter sea water pool. Good for doing laps but bring googles as the sea water does sting the eyes.
Do not stay here!

If you are expecting a 4 star hotel, you will be bitterly disappointed. I can't urge you enough to stay away from this rundown, desolate hotel.
From the moment we walked in we realised this was nowhere near the level you would expect from that rating: a desultory foyer, surly staff apart from Flavia who is too nice to work there, and a dirty and dispirit looking lounge and pool area. We were told we had been given an upgrade so I dread to think what the standard rooms are like. Our room was barren, nothing in it apart from an uncomfortable bed and a tiny TV, scratchy worn blankets and a tiny bathroom.
We were told that if we wanted clean beach towels every day we would need to pay €2 for them to be cleaned. We were told this was standard across Italy, something refuted by every other hotel we asked.
The 'private' beach is a few beach loungers which you have to pay extra for, double the price if you wanted to be by the water's edge. Staff were unhelpful in everything we asked of them.
The breakfast was truly shocking: processed packaged and cheap food, hot food was extra and there were plastic glasses for water and juice. It felt like a campsite refectory rather than a 4 star hotel.
We left after one night; I couldn't bear to waste our precious holiday in this dreadful hotel not to mention the cost which is horrendous considering the standard.
I would urge to stay at Is Morus Relais five minutes down the road which is also a four star hotel but a world apart. We turned up in a state of despair from the Abamar and they luckily had a room for us.
I don't normally write reviews but felt compelled to do so to save other people the cost and upset.
Great hotel in an amazing location

There are some very negative reviews of this hotel particularly from a couple of years ago which could be a bit off putting. However, we have just come back from a brilliant 7 night holiday at the hotel. The hotel could be seen as a bit dated by some but we didn't find it so. The public areas are very nice and well furnished and extremely clean & well kept. From the moment we entered the hotel the receptionists were polite and very helpful. A thank you to both Ellen & Flavia for their kind attention and extremely well spoken English. The rooms on the 3rd, 4th & 5th floors have all been refurbished and ours on the 4th floor with a seaview was well decorated, bright, very clean & tidy with a beautiful view from our furnished balcony. The housekeeping was great with the room cleaned daily and fresh towels provided every day. The gardens & pool area were very well maintained and the outside dining area was great for evening meals and breakfast. We stayed on a half board basis, the breakfasts were continental with eggs, pastries, meats and cheese, fruit and cereals. The evening meals were 4 course with salad, a pasta course, fish or meat course and dessert. The food was good and varied although one or two of the courses sometimes missed the mark but overall were pretty good. The hotel has direct access to a beautiful beach with the hotel having sunloungers & parasols for the residents use (a charge is made 10 euros for the first row or 5 euros for the second & third for 2 beds & a parasol). Towels are available for 10 euros deposit (refundable) & 2 euros per towel. The hotel has a beach bar which serves drinks & lunches which is great for avoiding the mid day sun. We had a great holiday at the Abamar and would definitely return. Compared to other 4 star hotels this is not expensive and offers good value for money but would recommend staying in a refurbished room preferably with a seaview as this is amazing.OK some negatives: there are no parasols around the pool, for the less mobile there are 40 stone steps down to the beach (we counted them) and the beach bar only serves lunches from the hotel's a la carte menu. However, walk 50 yards down the beach and there is a great beach bar the serves everything from a panini to a full meal. Oh and should you have a car the access road to the hotel is appallingly uneven and should be approached with extreme caution.During our stay the guests were mostly Italian with a few other Europeans. This seems to be a hotel a bit off the grid with the English.
This is not a four star establishment or holiday.

My partner and I booked the Hotel Abamar on booking.com based on how it looked there and its own website. The reviews seemed fine so I didn't think anything negative of it. But the main building itself has not been touched since the 1970s, its unclean, crawling with ants and mosquitoes. Some of the rooms have been "renovated" but there was no care taken and there is no quality present. There was no thought with the rooms either the beds are very uncomfortable, the walls too thin and most of the space in the small "Garden View" rooms is taken up by a dated enormous wardrobe. The food is another huge issue - no matter what you order it was wet and lukewarm which is not what you expect from Sardinia! And for what you're getting it's extremely overpriced. The only redeeming factor of this hotel is the outdoor area which seems to be the only part of the hotel that has seen any attention. The pool area is nice. But the beach, although on site, is an extra €5 per day per person. The staff are very inattentive and seem to all work the breakfast, lunch and dinner shift. All the guests seem really dejected and disappointed with the hotel and food too, so I can't understand why there aren't more negative reviews. Terrible value for money.
