What People are saying

Comfortable enough

Greets05 on 16/04/2017 12:59

Visited the hotel several times. In general im very happy about the place. Service is good, rooms are neat and food is tasteful. Only once, I had a small problem during the monsoon season. I slept on the 4th floor and water dropped down on my bed from the ceiling. After that, I was never given a room on the 4th floor.

Love the extra attention from the staff

yhailu2000 on 06/01/2017 22:00

I decided stayed at Addis Amba after checking in at Bahirdar 2 which was just unacceptable for me and my two kids. Addis Amba has very clean room and a wonderful staff to go with it. I stayed 4 nights and have no complaints. The staff was very attentive to all our needs. The room was always cleaned the moment we left our room. Just the friendliness and the smiles as the hotel will make me come back and stay here. Excellent wifi and DSTV channels disigned to meet the guests' needs are some of the things my kids and I enjoyed. Thank you Addis Amab!!!See you soon.

Just one small complaint, the ala- cart menu. My kids love pizza and ordered the pizza. The cheese wasn't really good and didn't melt on the pizza very well.It was not very good. We tried to order the beefsteak which was unavailable. If you have a menu that has several items on it, make all of them available.

maybe 2 star

The hotel is located on a main avenue with a church very nearby. The worship services started around 3.00AM and was still going on when I left at 9.00AM. I respected many items in the room as they were older than me. Clean but very old. Even the mosquito net seemed to be at least 10 years old. Restaurant clean and quick good service from staff.

Poor management

AfricaWide on 24/06/2016 19:34

Normally I would say this is a typical Ethiopian city hotel. Staff are very friendly and try hard. But in the end the poor management and upkeep of th place tainted the experience. Bed was worn and too soft. Many mosquitoes in the room and mosquito net was dirty and full of holes. I asked to have room sprayed. The person put so much spray the floors were slippery and I had to open all the windows. Internet never worked. There are enough places to choose from in Bahir Dar. Better to try somewhere else.

Falling standards but delightful staff

Derettens on 29/05/2016 16:09

Friends of ours, prior to finding in '14 a flat to rent, resided semi-permanently at the Abbis Amba (as opposed to the Papyrus Hotel) due to their need to have a stable internet connection at a reasonable price. On hearing that our hosts - Bahir Dar University - had booked us into the hotel, our friends assured us the choice was good.
Clearly the hotel's standards have declined in the intervening 2 years.

NEGATIVE - not the fault of the hotel:

LOUD MUSIC
On the north-west side there is a local eatery, which is used on Sundays for weddings. The accompanying loud music can go on until 03.00. At the back of the hotel is a shaded park where a number of eateries are located. The music issuing from the park every evening is deafening, but does end at circa 22.30.
ROACHES
There seems to be a direct correlation between rainfall and the appearance of roaches in the bedrooms. We ensnared an even dozen on each our the first two nights. How they got into the room was a mystery. Fortunately it did not rain again during our stay.

NEGATIVES - the responsibility of the hotel:
IN-HOUSE TOUR GUIDES
A fact of life in Bahir Dar is that every local does their best to use the monasteries as a source of income. Fair's fair. New arrivals are pounced on by every member of staff offering them tours of the monastery, the city and the market.
EGGS
Do NOT eat any of the egg dishes at breakfast. My wife got salmonella.
ELECTRICITY
The electricity supply in the city is patchy, so the hotel has a back-up generator. This does NOT explain why every morning the power supply failed. This is nerve wracking for any one with a medically oriented machine.
INTERNET
The routers depend on either or both the electricity supply and the generator. No electricity - no internet. But even when there was electricity, the internet failed with great regularity.
HOT WATER
No hot water for 2 days in the heat of May is not a joke.
ROOM SERVICE
Is according to the information booklet, available 24/7. But if a guest orders room service during a food service event in the restaurant - the guest has to wait. For as much as 2 hours.
LIFT
Be warned there is NO lift.
SLIPPERY FLOORS
Be warned the housekeepers mop the corridors and landings with great regularity. The floors when wet are like ice-rinks.
UNEVEN STAIRS
Be warned the height-rises of the steps on the staircase are not regular.
CLEANLINESS
Every curtain and table-cloth in the hotel should be washed. The mosquito nets should not only be washed but also checked for holes and replaced if necessary. Do not stay in Room 411 - the mosquito net has a hole large enough to admit a swarm of mosquitoes.
GREEN-CHILLI PEPPERS
The local variety is used in virtually every breakfast dish appearing in the buffet. Be warned, the peppers are unbelievably ferocious.
TROPICAL SALAD
According to the menu this salad contains avocado and mango. Even when there are avocados available in the market and vegetable stalls, they do not appear in the tropical salad. Frequently the mango is replaced with papaya.
Since a kilo of avocados can be bought for 15 birr, we daily supplied the kitchen with them to make our salads and did not receive a discount!!

POSITIVES:
BREAKFAST FRUIT-JUICES -the mango is by far the best but is less frequently available than the pineapple, papaya or the guava.
INJERA - available every breakfast and comes in two versions - the red berbere (hot and spicy) and the green un-spiced.
ETHIOPIAN COFFEE - served black, available from the bar throughout the day for 14 birr.
LAUNDRY SERVICE is cheap and both rapid and excellent.
THE STAFF are happy, well trained and always willing to help even if for the most part communication is very difficult.
MEDICAL HELP - the former director of the local private hospital has a medical practice in Room 504 of the Ambaye Building, which is next door to the Hotel.
AIRPORT SHUTTLE - the hotel has its own bus and driver BUT it failed to meet our flight!
FANS - all rooms are equipped with fans.
