What People are saying

The Best a Magnificent Country Has to Offer

normalwriter on 10/10/2017 20:14

I was a bit skeptical when, for our 40th anniversary, my husband arranged a trip to what he called an Italian farm. Sure, I love farm to table food and wine and beautiful countryside and hikes, but we don't speak the language and what will there be to do at such a place?

Boy, honey, was I wrong.

Agriturismo La Pietriccia is amazingly central to all the "fun" places of Tuscany: (Montepulciano, Monticchiello, and that fabulous drive through the land of the tall, skinny spruce trees). From my research, the town of Chianciano Terme has the most things to do while still giving you a small town feel. Then there's the food. It is Eatily, right???

From our first delicious dinner at Agriturismo, Stefano and his cooking-like-his-hair's-on-fire brother provided the finest in four-course, locally sourced dining. This duo consider food art and love to go into the kitchen and see "what happens." As if great cooking isn't enough, Stefano cultivates his own grapes, pours his own vintage, a robust red that we actually liked better than the pricy and famed Brunello wine from Montalcino.

Back home in Normal, Illinois, I rarely eat pork and might say I don't even like it.
Stefano wowed with meat from the once endangered and now prized Cinta Senese species of pig. This meat, locally produced in a free-range environment, was full of flavor yet tender, with little fat. In his menu, Stefano always drew straight from his garden, rich, buttery lettuces (yes, lettuces!) beets and carrots, eggplant, a peach cake using scrumptious fruit from his own orchard, rich jams and jellies, fresh tomatoes, peppers, and potatoes. I could go on and on about the food, my favorite being the product of a cooking school earlier that afternoon which we found on our dinner table: Omelette antipasti, studded with basil and pine nuts; 2 pasta selections: gnocchi with homemade pesto and ravioli stuffed with red pepper, more basil, and fresh tomatoes, two of those wondrous homemade sausages (no longer will I use the word homemade--everything is homemade) scalloped potatoes, and lemon cheesecake.

Every meal was beautifully presented by gregarious, efficient servers in a warm country setting right in the B&B dining room that overlooked the famed old town of Chianciano Terme. Breakfast was more of a buffet style, yet servers brought made-to-order coffees and warm and delicious pastries.

Okay, you say, but what do you do in the noneating hours? Every morning after breakfast, Stefano took the time to sit down with us and ask us what we'd like to do. He offered options, then let us decide. You want a hot springs pool? Fine. A sensoria spa experience? I'll get you a good rate. Stefano helped us plan a driving tour and made sure we knew about each sight so we'd have time to see what we really wanted to see. On our last day, when we wanted to do a local hike, Stefano set us off to see the pigs that had so interested me, the pigs that I'd consumed most every day...

A story in itself is the adventure that led one neighbor sending us to another, who spoke English, a local offering to sell us her land, finally meeting up with the English-speaking woman, who didn't know about the pigs but her son did, all culminating in this lovely family driving us right up to the gate of the pigs' realm since we'd gotten a bit lost.
In an achingly beautiful valley setting, it was unbelievably wonderful to experience the concept of humane treatment, the beauty of animals romping about--yes, pigs--and bask in the hospitality of the Italian Tuscan people.

I haven't even told you about the lovely suite--well-stocked kitchen, sitting area, bath, bedroom, private deck...all meticulously clean, updated, and surrounded with lush vegetation and an electric privacy gate. Stefano houses his guests either in his main farmhouse or a more modern place up the road, as in a couple of hundred steps. (That's where we stayed.) Nor have I mentioned Stefano's swimming pool (in late September, too chilly for us), relaxing areas, gardens, wine cellar, and much, much more. Stefano's place is such a good deal that the locals stay here, too. Now THAT'S a sign of a bargain as well as a blissful spot.

We left Agriturismo with a bottle of that amazing wine, what felt like a lifetime of memories (only 4 short days), and, I truly believe, a new friend. Stefano is multitalented, selfless when it comes to caring for his guests, and well-conversant in English. We would definitely return to his beautiful spot in a land loaded with beautiful spots. In fact, Stefano's place would be rated FIRST in beauty, entertainment, relaxation, connection with locals...even over the amazing Cinque Terre!

The Way Life Should Be

I loved staying here and meeting Stefano, Serena, Elisa and the rest of their wonderful staff. Stefano was a helpful guide and a kindred spirit. He intuited what I was interested in doing and would sit down with me every morning and map out an itinerary. I enjoyed my breakfasts in the common dining area with great views of the old part of town. I would spend an hour or two lingering over a simply country meal, great coffee, fresh juice and of course my journal. Their wine is delicious and the accommodations were simple and comfortable, perfect for me. The place is centralIy located for a rich visit in that part of Tuscany. Montepulciano is only ten minutes away! Everything is very close. And I very much enjoyed the town of Chianciano Terme, not only the baths but the food and rich history. I would certainly go back.

Fun cooking class, slow food philosophy and delicious meal

We had a great time with the entertaining Stefano teaching us to make ravioli, tortellini, pesto, potato cakes, sausage and ricotta gnocchi. It was a really hands on experience and we learned about the slow foods movement. He has hydroponically grown greens, his own olive trees and vineyard. After the class we had a feast consisting of the things we had prepared. After the meal, we were given a copy of the recipes. I highly recommend this experience for a fun class and sumptuous meal.

Lovely! I would stay again!

This was the first time I stayed at an Agrotourismo. It was lovely!
The prices are great compared to hotels. The food was wonderful and all home grown. They had a pool which was great after a hot day of touring. The location here was great for touring the Tuscany area.
Stefano the owner/host is gruff but mostly gracious.
The room is simple - one does not come here for luxury. We booked late and did not get the larger room we wanted.
I would stay again!

Room and bathroom are large enough and booth very clean. The air conditioning worked well. We have a large terrace with a beautiful view. The swimmingpool ist nice and clean with sun loungers and parasols. The breakfast ist very good, the dinner varies between very good and excellent. The owner was so friendly to give us tips to explore the surroundings. The staff is very friendly and helpful. We felt comfortable. We will stay again.
