What People are saying

Best Vacation Ever

DLEJTH on 21/11/2017 00:56

I have stayed at this resort many times . It never stops surprising me , just when I think it couldn't be better they go above and beyond !! It is perfect in every way delectable dining, Impeccable staff ..The rooms are not only comfortable but spotless ..I am impressed every time I arrive and continue to be impressed everyday of my vacation ..The only negative thing about the time spent there is the day I have to leave , no worries however I will return over and over again .

Very good

jenna2407 on 20/11/2017 19:09

Just returned from ABBWR.
Overall we had a very enjoyable stay.
We stayed in both block 3 and 2 (had to move due to very noisy neighbours!).
Each block had there own pros and cons.
Block 3- before noisy neighbours was much quieter and had much better ocean views.
Block 2- right in front of the pool and still had an ocean view.
Whilst we enjoyed our stay, there was just something that wasn't 5star about it.

PROS-
The beach!! I have never stayed on such an amazing beautiful beach! We were so lucky to see baby turtles hatching. Really was a dream come true. The snorkelling was amazing, try and go as early as possible as you will see much more. We saw 3 different spieces of turtles, stingrays, squid, And so many varietys of fish!

The beds - one of the comfiest beds I have slept in whilst on holiday.

House keeping- absolutely brilliant in both rooms! Kept the rooms spotless and did some lovely towel animals.

The hotel grounds- absolutely pristine, they were pruning them non stop!

The staff- all so hard working and cheerful! Would like to especially say thankyou to - the omelette lady, benjamin, ulesis, and the rest of the staff in the mexican restraunt. The reception staff were great. Especially the lady who helped us to move rooms when we needed too.

Towels - always fresh and plentiful around the pool! If they ran out, it was a matter of minutes till they had them again! Great service.

CONS

Smoking - never have I stayed somewhere so bad for smoking. At times I felt like we were the only ones who didn't smoke. We couldn't watch the evening entertainment as it was just 1 big smoke cloud. We couldn't use the hot tub on the balcony once we got smokers next door, and we couldn't have our balcony door open either. They really need to split the blocks into one side smoking, one side non. The lobby was meant to be non smoking, yet people were smoking all over and it was never challenged. This issue alone would stop me coming back to this resort.

Seating in the evening- I would say they only have enough seating for half (at most!!) Of the guests in an evening. A couple of nights we had to just go to bed as there was nowhere to sit (not even in the smoke cloud!!)

Plastic straws- they really need to stop using them... there were so many just discarded on the beach, them poor turtles!! Other hotels In the area don't use them and it isn't an issue! So please rethink them.

Sunbed hoggers- if you weren't up early (between 7/half7!) You could forget getting a sunbed!! It was ridiculous. People would put a towel on and then go back to bed! A few days we saw beds reserved and literally no one ever come to them!

We ate in all the restaurants, we liked the mexican best, staff were so good and so was the food!
Japanese, very good!
Gourmet, not the best! The pork was disgusting!! The steak was nice. Dessert here was the best though.
Brazilian... this was the worst. Service was rubbish, asked us after 3 tiny lumps of meat if we were done! Not much better the 2nd time.
Buffet wasn't great... food.was never hot. Quite bland. No difference between lunch and evening!!
Room service, lunch was great!! Evening meal was ok.

Overall we did enjoy our stay, but sadly wouldn't return. I am very glad we did stay here... but one visit is enough.

3rd Time Even Better!

LorneSeaton on 20/11/2017 13:59

It's hard to imagine that a 3rd time back to the same property could match or exceed the previous visits but at Akumal Bay for our 3rd time, that's exactly how we feel. Everything from check-in, the accommodation, the staff (who feel more like friends than hotel employees), the food and the entire experience in itself was nothing more than terrific! We could go on and on about it all but suffice it to say that for a 300 room resort with most rooms directly beach front you just couldn't ask for more. It's all about quality and service and the folks at Akumal Bay just do it right. We have many honorable mentions that we just have to talk about. Raul Yam, the manager for general reception and accommodations is committed to making your stay the best you can expect. We even had the opportunity to meet his wife and 2 children and we were just awed by how lovely a family they are. The front desk staff are 2nd to none in our view; friendly, accommodating and helpful. Our room in the 3300 series of rooms was tended to by Magdalena. She even got to know our daily schedule and most days would make up our room very early and always left a terrific "towel sculpture", even a crocodile one day, how cool. On the beach/beach bar at buildings 3&4 you just can't get better team than Abigail, Yusif and Marceimo and at the Sushi Bar, Oscar, Patricia and Marcia were amazing. We normally had breakfast at the snack bar for it's view of the beach and laid backness. Amilcar greeted us most every morning, brought us our mimosa's and always spent time chatting if he wasn't busy. At the Kooben gourmet restaurant the manager Daniel, hostess Ambar and Aaron, Jesus, Marcos and Salvador made our dining experience just a pleasure, not to mention the great food. And we just can't forget about the ever present Wilbert in the main lobby bar and Fernando in the smaller lobby bar. Thanks all and hopefully we will see you all again when return for visit #4.

Paradise

We just returned from a 10 day vacation. This is our 30th vacation south so we are able to make a fair comparison to numerous resorts. Amazing beach, snorkeling, food and service.
Some things this resort does that many others in the same category and price range don't are: unlimited a la carte restaurants with no reservations required, comfortable beds and quality bedding, a sushi bar, wait service on the beach, a beach manager that controls abuse of chair saving (thanks Luis), long beach front with all buildings having ocean views, numerous yoga programs, stand up paddle boarding, no charge pillow menu and aroma therapy, elevators, farewell drink and gift and an excursion desk that will help you and not just try to sell you something. This was something I really appreciated, not having someone trying to sell me something every time you turn around. The vendors that did come to the resort on Thursday had genuine Mexican crafts and were not at all pushy. I found all the shops in Akumal and Tulum much less aggressive than other markets or in Playa Del Carmen.
Some things this resort does not have: adult pools, loud music, foam parties, towel cards, large kids pools or water parks, cheesey evening shows, surveys, vendors hassling you on the beach or pushy time share people. Everyone may have different opinions if you want these things or not.
My personal preference would be to have palapas rather than the bamboo shelters on the beach to provide better shade and cover for light rain. I enjoyed all the restaurants twice and would have liked to see an Italian or steakhouse type restaurant. It did seem they were trying too hard to make the Asian and Mexican restaurants "gourmet, fine dining". We usually look for adult pools but this beach is amazing and didn't use the pools at all. I also think the evening entertainment would be much better if there were more bands that played danceable music. One night there was an excellent band and people enjoyed dancing. Other nights it was more like just background music.
If you are looking for a relaxing beach vacation, this is the place to go.
We will be back, I'm sure many more times.

Most incredible holiday ever

Ccynxn on 19/11/2017 23:11

Returned to U.K. a week ago today and we are already wishing that we were back in this incredible hotel in this incredible place. We were overwhelmed by the sheer luxury and beauty of Akumal Bay and both jumped for joy on our first night. We would like to thank each and every staff member for making our trip the best we have ever been on. The location, food, staff, service, cocktails and atmosphere were top notch and we cannot fault anything about our 14 night stay. We felt like royalty and thoroughly enjoyed each and every minute we spent with you guys. Thank you for giving us smiles, laughs, and memories that will last a lifetime. I have never experienced anything quite as outstanding. We will definitely be back!

P.s special thanks to fernando for his amazing lemon drops and also every poor member of staff who delivered the (many) plates of room service! (So yummy)
